From the moment I shook hands with David Clayton of My Hands Healing, I knew I'd be in for a special experience. He's a man with a strong handshake, blissfully warm hands and a calm disposition.
My Hands Healing offers a range of massage and tactile therapies, such as relaxation massage, therapeutic massage, myofascial release therapy, craniosacral therapy, manual lymphatic drainage, sports massage and pregnancy massage. David is a registered Remedial Massage Therapist with Massage and Myotherapy Australia and can provide on the spot rebates with all major health funds.
David Clayton specialises in myofascial release therapy which he describes as a gentle, deep, remedial technique targeting connective tissues by using stretches and holds to restore function. David further explained fascia as the body's intricate web of connective tissue that penetrates and surrounds every muscle, organ, blood vessel and bone of the body. Myofascial release can be effective in reducing pain associated with neurological and chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.
At My Hands Healing, a 90 minute initial appointment is recommended to enable David to complete a comprehensive assessment and provide effective treatment. As soon as David started my assessment, it felt like he'd tapped into and was communicating with my body in a subliminal way, getting information from it whilst assessing my posture and movement.
After my assessment, David recommended a treatment of myofacsial release therapy which is deemed to be one of the more gentle and effective forms of massage and tactile therapy (as described above). Given my long history of living with chronic pain and ongoing treatment by various practitioners such as chiropractors, physiotherapists and massage therapists and the fact I had yet to be treated with myofascial release therapy, I was all too keen to agree with David's recommendation.
Being desk-bound in a call centre for large portions of my working days, my main areas of chronic pain stem from the base of my skull through to the lower back with significant pain and restriction in my thoracic spine. At its worst, my chiropractor has trouble mobilising my thoracic spine which results in minimal relief and I have found physiotherapy to be not immediate or effective enough.
So it was with great faith (and a little skepticism) that I put my body, mind and soul into what I would soon experience to be the very capable hands of David Clayton of My Hands Healing. I lost track of time as I lay on my back on a very comfortable massage table and ambient music, whereby David commenced with treatment to my cranium and neck. He very gently and for some duration stretched and massaged my cranium and neck and it was interesting (and wondrous) to feel heat generating from his hands which had the effect of relaxing my mind as well as my body.
Next was my thoracic region (the biggest challenge, in my mind): amazingly David easily and effectively treated it - firmly yet gently pulling and stretching each arm to the side and through a range of motion to release the various fasciae.
By this time, my pain had been eased substantially and I was then instructed to lie face down whilst David treated the remaining fasciae - it didn't take long before I vagued out and was on the way to the land of nod where just at that point (ie. snoring point), David advised we had reached the end of my treatment (boo hoo). I left My Hands Healing feeling much lighter and more positive in mind, body and spirit and with no where near the amount of pain I entered with.
