My Generation - Film Review (British Film Festival 2018)

"For the times they are a-changin'" The famous words coined by Bob Dylan in his 1964 hit song. This was no more truthful than in the 60's and this change was felt no greater than in London, England. My Generation is a documentary that follows everything that made the 60's great. From the music, style, fashion, art and everything in between. Hosted by British film icon Michael Caine, My Generation cuts a plethora of footage from the 60's with interviews conducted by Caine and soundbites from around the era. This is a quintessential trip down memory lane to one of the most revolutionary times in modern history.

My Generation is all about style and flair. Just like the period of time that it follows the footage, music and editing are all blended together to create a lively, fast based and exciting experience. Sharp cuts, with candid shots and sequences from the 60's builds up an atmosphere where things were changing rapidly, and youth were consistently challenging the status quo.

The two primary themes of My Generation are change and overcoming the strict rules and traditions of the 'Old Guard'. Multiple celebrities from Paul McCartney, David Bailey, Twiggy, Marianne Faithful and many others give their own accounts and commentary of growing up in the 60's. From miniskirts causing a stir, young musicians and actors from the suburbs becoming international stars, all new drugs and experiences being discovered. My Generation demonstrates the first real time that youth believed they could buck the system and achieve dreams beyond their means.

Michael Caine's approach is affable and approachable. His interviews with other celebrities come across as conversations between longtime friends as they reminisce about such a turbulent time in their lives. Caine and other guests actually share very little screen time in the flick. Instead, the film continues to show related clips and images with the cast speaking over the top. This creates an uninterrupted flow to the senses where you can consistently be absorbed in the imagery and art of the 60s while absorbing information and anecdotes shared by those interviewed.

My Generation is one of many fantastic films being shown as part of the British Film Festival. Films for the BFF will be screening at Palace Nova Eastend and Palace Nova Prospect between the 24th of October to 14th of November. Things kick off with the Australian premiere screening of Colette starring Keira Knightley. More details can be found on their website here .
