There are films for all ages and tastes premiering in Australian theatres this month. From thrillers and horror to blockbuster adventures, start with these top 5 movies in September.


  • It – September 7
  • Rated MA15 for strong horror themes and violence

    Clowns, with their gags, magic tricks, baggy pants and big red noses, made children of all ages giggle with glee. Since Stephen King's best selling horror novel, It, those zany antics ended as we endured scream-filled nightmares. 2016 was another scary year for coulrophobia sufferers, with an epidemic of creepy clown sightings . In 2017, Bill Skarsgård (Atomic Blonde, Anna Karenina) will terrify a new generation as Pennywise, an evil clown in Maine, as he terrorises local children who must fight back to survive.

    Directed by horror veteran, Andy Muschietti, It also stars Jaeden Lieberher (St. Vincent).



  • Kingsman: The Golden Circle – September 21

    Eggsy returns to save the world again his comedy adventure in 2015's smash hit, Kingsman: The Secret Service. The British super spy (Taron Egerton) teams with the top agent (Channing Tatum) in the Statesman, the American partner agency to the Kingsman. After their HQs are destroyed, they'll battle the megalomaniac (Julianne Moore) with a lethal bespoke umbrella and eye-poking bullwhip.

    Directed by horror veteran, Andy Muschietti, Kingsman: The Golden Circle also stars Colin Firth, Halle Berry, Mark Strong, Jeff Bridges and Elton John.




  • The Lego Ninjago Movie – September 21
  • Classification Pending

    The popular Lego craze of 2010, with over 100 sets featuring ninjas and dragons, has spawned cartoons, books, comics, video games and spinners. A blockbuster 3D film continues the story, with the Master Builder (Jackie Chan) and his band of ninja warriors, battle a naughty villain with magic, robots and wisecracks.

    The Lego Ninjago Movie also stars Dave Franco, Olivia Munn Michael Peña Abbi Jacobson and Zach Woods.




  • mother! – September 14
  • Classification Pending

    Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream), the director of mind-bending suspense and mystery films, returns with another psychological thriller in mother! As a couple (Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem) settle into a country home, their serenity is rattled by a pair of gatecrashing guests. As the awkward evening continues, love is tested, threatening their peaceful existence.

    mother! also stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed Harris.




  • American Assassin – September 14
  • Rated MA15 for strong violence

    Mitch Rapp, the CIA black ops agent portrayed in 16 novels, hits the cinema with his first adventure, based on the best selling novel of the same name by Vince Flynn. After his girlfriend is killed in a terrorist attack, Mitch's (Dylan O'Brien - The Maze Runner, Deepwater Horizon) talent for spywork and combat are honed by Cold War vet (Michael Keaton - Batman, Birdman, The Founder) as they chase a Turkish terrorist, fighting to prevent another war in the Middle East while violently exacting revenge.

    Directed by Michael Cuesta (Kill the Messenger, Billions, Homeland, Elementary, Dexter), American Assassin also stars Sanaa Lathan (Alien vs. Predator), Taylor Kitsch (Lone Survivor) and David Suchet (Poirot).
