There are films for all ages and tastes premiering in Australian theatres this month. From drama and comedy to epic wartime thrillers and comic book blockbusters, start with these top 5 movies in July.

  • The Beguiled – July 13
  • Classification Pending
    Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation, Marie Antoinette) brings Thomas P. Cullinan novel, A Painted Devil, to the big screen, the second adaptation after Clint Eastwood's critically acclaimed film from 1971.

    Set during the American Civil War, The Beguiled stars Colin Farrell as a Union soldier, injured and imprisoned in a Confederate boarding school. The sheltered women (Kirsten Dunst, Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning), innocent and unfamiliar with romantic love, become infatuated by the enemy soldier, driving a cruel struggle for his affections. As the tension amongst the trio grows, they begin conspiring against him, leading to a dramatic conclusion.

    Sofia won the the Best Director award at Cannes for The Beguiled .





  • Spider-Man: Homecoming – July 6
  • Classification Pending
    The third reboot for the web-slinger, Spider-Man: Homecoming begins in the months after Captain America: Civil War.

    The latest Spider-Man (Tom Holland) continues his superhero apprenticeship with Iron Man (Robert Downey Jnr.) while trying to finish his schoolwork. He is initiated to the chaos of crime fighting, facing the Vulture, akin to Tony Soprano with mechanical wings, played by the former Batman and Birdman, Michael Keaton.

    Also starring Zendaya, Jon Favreau, Donald Glover, Marisa Tomei.





  • Dunkirk – July 20

    Written and directed by Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight trilogy, Interstellar, Inception), Dunkirk is the thrilling dramatisation of the Battle of Dunkirk in 1940.

    With the Nazis sweeping across Europe during World War II, scores of Allied troops are flee from Dunkirk, France, for the safer shores of Britain. While trying to cross the English Channel, they become surrounded, retreating from an overwhelming force to prevent the death or capture of hundreds of thousands of Allied troops.

    Bringing the tension and terror of the battle, in the air, sea and land, to the cinema, the suspense heightens with detailed action and sparse dialogue, reminiscent of the visceral opening to Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan.

    Starring Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Harry Styles, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, James D'Arcy and Miranda Nolan.





  • War for the Planet of the Apes – July 27
  • Classification Pending
    Caesar (Andy Serkis), the cute primate from James Franco's lab in Rise of the Planet of the Apes lab, is now ruler of the genetically modified ape nation.

    While he tried for an uneasy truce with the human race in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and continues to hope for a peace, vicious attacks lead to a war between the species.

    Woody Harrelson channels his best Colonel Kurtz as he obsessively attacks the ape army.

    Also starring Steve Zahn, Judy Greer, Karin Konoval, Amiah Miller and Terry Notary.





  • Baby Driver – July 13
  • Rated MA15 for strong violence
    A young getaway driver (Ansel Elgort - Divergent Series, The Fault in Our Stars), is at the top of the driving game, aiding bank robbers and heist gangs.

    He relies on the rapid beats of an energetic soundtrack to offset his tinnitus (although the tunes probably caused it) and quicken his reflexes. He dreams of a fairytale drive into the sunset with his girlfriend, but before he can cash in, the Bond-villainesque Kevin Spacey drags him back for one final high stakes robbery.

    Baby Driver also stars Lily James, Jon Bernthal, Eiza González, with Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx. This action comedy thriller is fuelled by tunes from dozens of dance and alternative-rock musicians.

  • Classification Pending
    Casey Affleck plays a haunting, dramatic Casper: the Friendly Ghost after a premature death. Lingering in his grieving lover's home, he tries to bridge the void and console her before his time runs out.



  • A Date for Mad Mary – July 13
  • Classification Pending
    A craic-filled Irish comedy drama about a woman released from prison and feeling the stigma of her criminal record when she's invited to be maid of honour by her best friend. Determined to bring a date to the wedding, the ex-crim plays the dating game.
