The Girl on the Train – October 6
Classification rating pending
Paula Hawkins' best-selling psychological thriller debuted at No. 1 in 2015. After selling over 11 million copies, the adaptation will premiere in October. Recently divorced, Rachel Watson endures the daily commute without Angry Birds or Pokemon Go but instead wondering about a couple living near her ex-husband. Finally overwhelmed by curiosity, she's led to a shocking confrontation and a mystery where vague memories, alcohol and emotional betrayal create wildly different perspectives for the same events. Discovering the truth will be the most thrilling ordeal for the viewer since Gone Girl. The film stars Emily Blunt (The Adjustment Bureau, Looper, Edge of Tomorrow), Hayley Bennett, Luke Evans, Lisa Kudrow, Rebecca Ferguson, Justin Theroux, Edgar Ramirez and Allison Janney.

Café Society – October 20
Classification rating pending
Woody Allen's (Annie Hall, Manhattan, Midnight in Paris, Vicky Cristina Barcelona) premieres are an annual event as he directs new films with ensemble casts at a rapid pace. Café Society, his biggest film yet, continues the streak. Set in 1930s Los Angeles, the lavish costumes and noir streets are a rich setting for his twist-filled romance. A young man moves to the big city, aided by his uncle but as they move in the same society circles, they inadvertently fall for the same woman. Blissfully unaware, they continue their relationships until a letter from the romantic icon, Rudolph Valentino, leads to a dramatic decision in Central Park. The film stars Jesse Eisenberg (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Now You See Me, Social Network), Steve Carell (The Office, Foxcatcher, Get Smart), Kristen Stewart (The Twilight Saga), Blake Lively, Anna Camp, Kelly Rohrbach, Corey Stoll, Parker Posey, Paul Schneider, Tony Sirico, Ken Stott and Jeannie Berlin.

Masterminds – October 13
Rated M for crude humour and violence
Heist films typically star action A-listers as a gang of aggressive, hardened criminals led by a mastermind's plan to rob the evil rich in a daring raid, pursued by an army of police and cunning detectives. In reality, these crimes are often committed by bold but dim-witted thieves, delusional after an evening of drinking, complaining about being broke and imagining they can succeed where Robert De Niro failed in Heat. Zach Galifianakis (Hangover), the most unlikely armoured car driver possible, brings this dream to the cinema when he steals $17-million, aided by a mob of equally clueless dreamers. Like many Lotto winners, his joy is short-lived as friends and enemies pursue him for a share of the loot. The film also stars Kristen Wiig (Knocked Up, Ghostbusters), Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses), Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Owen Wilson (Zoolander), Ken Marino and Kate McKinnon.

Inferno (image by Columbia Pictures)

Inferno – October 13
Rated M for mature themes, violence and coarse language
Dan Brown's conspiracy novels have a massive following. Inferno is the latest in Brown's global conspiracy thrillers, previously linking the Catholic Church and the Freemasons to sinister schemes and civilisation-changing secrets. Inferno is inspired by the many themes, symbols and hidden codes in Dante's Divine Comedy poem, specifically the Inferno, the journey into Hell. The 14th century epic was vividly portrayed in art and architecture throughout Europe. Robert Langdon (Tom HanksSully, Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan) returns to solve the riddles, beginning with the theft of Dante's deathmask as he races to prevent the global apocalypse recounted in the poem and realised by a crazed scientist using it as inspiration to spread a plague to save us from the crisis of overpopulation. The film also stars Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything, The Tempest, Rogue One), Ben Foster (The Program, Warcraft, Lone Survivor, The Messenger), Irrfan Khan, Omar Sy and Sidse Babett Knudsen.

Hell or High Water (image by Lionsgate)

Hell or High Water – October 20
Classification rating pending
Jeff Bridges (Tron, The Big Lebowski, Iron Man, Seabiscuit, The Fisher King, Starman) leaves his cowboy hat on after Crazy Heart and True Grit to hunt Chris Pine (Star Trek, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Into the Woods) and Ben Foster (The Program, Warcraft, Lone Survivor, The Messenger), brothers on a crime spree. The tension between Pine, a struggling father desperate to save the family farm, and his brother, Foster, a violent, desperate ex-con, as they rob the local bank after they threaten foreclosure. Stunned at escaping with bags of cash, they continue robbing branches throughout the State with Bridges, the Texas Ranger, doggedly pursuing them. This modern-day Western uses dramatic outback landscapes as captivating backdrops, especially for fans of the Aussie Westerns, Mystery Road and Goldstone. The film also stars Dale Dickey, Gil Birmingham, Katy Mixon and Kevin Rankin.
