I love finding that perfect book--a book that you cannot put down, and that takes you on an emotional journey, full of twists and turns making the read incredibly exciting and endearing.

Summer is quickly approaching and that means holidays and beach time. There's no better time to find a new and exhilarating book to read than now.

I have compiled a list of my top 5 personal must read books, but would love to know of others so please share your thoughts.

The Kite Runner
Khaled Hosseini

The Plot

The kite runner follows the story of an unlikely friendship of two boys growing up in Afghanistan in the 1970's. Amir is the son of an admired wealthy businessman and Hassan is the son of their poor Hazara servant Ali. The story is set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of the monarchy in Afghanistan through the Soviet invasion, the mass exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the rise of the Taliban regime. It is a heart-warming and touching story about the power of reading, the price of betrayal, and the possibility of redemption; and an exploration of the power of fathers over sons—their love, their sacrifices, their lies.

Memoirs of A Geisha
Arthur Golden

The Plot

Nitta Sayuri tells the story of her life as a geisha. It begins in a poor fishing village in 1929, when, as a nine-year-old girl with unusual blue-gray eyes, she is taken from her home and sold into slavery to a renowned geisha house. We witness her transformation as she learns the rigorous arts of the geisha: dance and music; wearing kimono, elaborate makeup, and hair; pouring sake to reveal just a touch of inner wrist; competing with a jealous rival for men's solicitude and the money that goes with it.

As World War II looms Japan and the geisha's world are forever changed by the onslaught of history.

It tells a story of a world where appearances are paramount; where a girl's virginity is auctioned to the highest bidder; where women are trained to beguile the most powerful men; and where love is scorned as illusion. It is simply beautiful and unforgettable.

The Time Travellers Wife
Audrey Niffenegger

The Plot

This is an unusual yet endearing tale of love, fate and belief. It tells the story of Henry DeTamble, a dashing, adventuresome librarian who travels involuntarily through time, and Clare Abshire, an artist whose life takes a natural sequential course. Henry and Clare's passionate love affair endures across a sea of time and captures the two lovers in an impossibly romantic trap. The many twists and turns in this novel makes it impossible to put down!

Life of Pi
Yann Martell

The Plot

This is a story of an Indian zookeeper's son, who survives a shipwreck. Though Pi generally describes his many days at sea as monotonous, he also describes the sexual behaviour of zoo animals and relates tales of danger and survival with great tension, using elaborate detail to describe wild animals killing and eating each other and humans killing and eating animals. The novel also includes acts of murder and cannibalism, which can seem quite gory. Pi also takes us on a journey of his own belief system from the teachings of the Catholic, Hindu, and Muslim religions, saying that he simply wants to "love God."

The Lovely Bones
Alice Sebold

The Plot

Susie Salmon is a 14-year-old girl living in suburban 1970's Pennsylvania who is murdered by her neighbour. Susie tells the story from the place between Heaven and Earth whilst watching her family cope with their grief. Her father embarks on a search for the killer, her sister undertakes a feat of amazing daring, her little brother builds a fort in her honour and begin the difficult process of healing. This is a story of seemingly unbearable tragedy that is transformed into a suspenseful and touching story about family, memory, love, heaven, and living.
