If you missed the Portarlington Mussel Festival in January, you can still enjoy one of the key events held on that day. Port Philip Ferries ran a highly successful Mussels, Wine and Bay Cruise Tour around the waters of the Bellarine, including the Portarlington mussel farms.
This proved so popular that now they are running more of these great tours. The experience begins when you walk onto the Portarlington Pier and smell the BBQ mussels. This is your chance to sample the freshest mussels you will ever taste just before you hop on board.
During the one hour tour, you'll be treated to a drink from their bar. Enjoy a local cider, wine or beer. You can also order non-alcoholic drinks and hot drinks if you prefer.
Did you realise that Portarlington produces up to 60% of Australia's mussels? And I have heard from top city chefs that this is where many source their mussels.
On these mussel tours, you will hear from local mussel producers and sellers. It might be Jenny from Mr Mussel a business that sells Australian mussels, oysters, and seasonal fish direct to the public from Portarlington Pier. Or Peter from Advanced Mussel Supply and The Little Mussel Cafe. Advance Mussel Supply is a locally owned and operated aquaculture farm producing fresh Portarlington mussels and Angasi oysters direct from the sea to the public.
This seaside farm gate evolved into The Little Mussel Cafe that serves all things mussels such as mussel chowder, mussel tasting plates, chilli mussels as well as items to take home, such as soused mussels, smoked mussels and jerky mussels.
So you are bound to hear about all things mussels, including information on farming as well as culinary insights.
Enjoy the sea breeze from the outdoor decks, or take in the views from the comfy indoor seats. This is your chance to enjoy the magnificent Bellarine Express ferry outside of its normal scheduled service.
