Musos' Blackboard @ The UpFront Club

I was a very lucky girl recently when a friend of mine asked me to accompany her to
The UpFront Club in
Maleny for Musos' Blackboard, where musicians perform a 15 minute slot, enjoy a Bunya Meal, and compete for cash prizes.
On the night I came along, there were 13 acts performing, which ranged from blues to folk to Latin to gypsy; people playing guitar, keys, saxophone, harmonica, and percussive instruments like the
cajon . They performed covers, originals and even some instrumental tracks.
For dinner, there was choices for meat-eaters, vegetarians and vegans alike, and the Thai red curries looked (and smelled) good, available in tofu or organic chicken, but I'm a sucker for a veggie stack. The Bunya Meal came with salad and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was way too warm for me to drink anything but water on the night, but drinks were reasonably priced and wine is available by the glass and by the bottle for sharing.
A thunderstorm broke about 9pm and created some additional energy in the room as well as the threat of a black-out, which probably would've just created an unplugged jam session. A couple of performers made CDs available for sale, including a great duo called
Free Like Me and a young gent called
Sam Shepherd , whose quick finger work on the guitar reminded me a little of
Daniel Champagne .
It's highly recommended to call to book a table in advance, because the place was packed with locals and out of towners alike. And to make sure you secure a spot on the musos' blackboard, give Danny a call.
The UpFront Club is located on Maple Street in Maleny, which is between one and one-and-a-half hour's drive from Brisbane (depending on traffic). Make a Monday night out of it by getting together a few friends to enjoy an evening out of the city. Be aware that Musos' Backboard will be closed over the holidays, returning on 7 January 2013.
