Based on the much loved 1994 movie by PJ Hogan,
#about ">
Muriel's Wedding is full of original music, hilarity, great characters, costumes and set design. The show is bright, colourful and beautiful and you are guaranteed to leave with a smile on your face.
The world premiere is playing a very limited season at Sydney's
Roslyn Packer Theatre . It is
Muriel's Wedding, but not as you remember, it has been modernised in a sympathetic and relevant way. PJ Hogan was instrumental in maintaining the integrity of the much-loved film by reworking his screenplay and choosing the perfect cast to play such well-known characters.
Maggie McKenna does a wonderful job as the 'useless'
Muriel Heslop and seems to have a genuine rapport with
Rhonda played by
Madeleine Jones. It is truly heartbreaking to see
Justine Clarke shuffling along as the distracted, long-suffering
Betty Heslop compared to the beautifully played overblown strutting of
Helen Dallimore as
Deidre Chambers. There are many other standout performances, the nasty
Tania Degano and her she-pack of selfie-obsessed girlfriends are deliciously funny.
Christie Whelan Brown certainly gives
Sophie Lee a run for her money in her portrayal of
Tania.
It is just as satirical, naughty and irreverent as the film and is full of hilarious cameo performances. The music of ABBA is used to great effect but the standout original soundtrack from Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nutall really hits the nail on the head. Although very funny,
deals with some heavy and dark topics. The themes of bullying, harassment, corruption depression and marginalisation are all there aided and abetted by the pervasive 'god' of social media.
Leave the kids with a babysitter as this is not a show for young children, the humour is dark, there is strong language and the sexual references may be difficult to explain. The show runs for 2 hours 50 minutes with a short interval but is fast paced and does not feel long.
I can't speak highly enough of my experience at
Muriel's Wedding - everything about the show exceeded my expectations and even my cynical husband had a fabulous time. If possible, I would like to return as
'guest' at the wedding of
Mariel and
Alex.
is bold, brash and unapologetically 'Sydney-centric' it would be terrible to miss it.
