The freshest Tasmanian seafood served on Hobart's docks
Victoria Dock, found just a short stroll from Hobart's Salamanca Place, is the home port for many fishing boats plying their trade in Tasmania's pristine waters. But the dock is also home to an institution on the Tasmanian seafood scene: Mures.
Mures Fish Centre opened in 1987 and offers a range of dining experiences for seafood lovers. In a state famous for its fresh and delicious seafood, Mures has an enviable reputation among tourists and travellers alike.
Fine dining at Mures is at their Upper Deck restaurant, which offers great views of the Hobart waterfront. From entrees of oysters, ocean trout salad and crab arancini, you move on to mains like oven-baked blue eye trevalla, Tasmanian Atlantic salmon and seafood basilica. The seafood platter for two ($89) sounds (and looks) pretty spectacular, while there's a handful of steak and chicken options if you fancy turf rather than surf.
Downstairs you'll find Mures Lower Deck, where the meals are simpler and the prices cheaper. This is the spot for your traditional seafood feast: calamari, crumbed scallops, a piece of crumbed or battered fish, and of course plenty of chips. The menu also features options from the grill and from the wok, as well as a couple of platters to choose from.
The Lower Deck restaurant is more of a family bistro. You can sit inside or out, but if weather permits it's best to get a table outside. It's quite relaxing to tuck into a fisherman's basket here while gazing out over the docks.
The Mures Centre also features the Orizuru Sushi Bar, promoted as a little bit of Japan in Hobart. The Japanese sushi chefs here create gourmet gastronomic delights, making the most of the fresh Tasmanian seafood on offer.
