Are you looking for something different to do this Friday night (20th April)?

Maybe you'd like to consider coming along to celebrate Mu'ooz's 10th birthday at their West End restaurant. You will enjoy a delicious Eritrean feast and entertainment whilst learning a little about this wonderful social enterprise and the people whom Mu'ooz supports to settle into their new Australian lives.

I enjoyed my first Mu'ooz meal and experience soon after the restaurant opened in Moorooka downstairs at the back of an arcade many years ago. I met the "mother" of Mu'ooz and hundreds of African women, Saba, who is a wonderful, nurturing Eritrean elder.

Saba's vision resulted in establishing this not for profit social enterprise in 2008 with 22 African refugee women from Rwanda, Eritrea, Somalia, Ethiopia Liberia and Burundi completing their Certificate II in Hospitality qualification. The women trained and worked in the restaurant and catering business and within 6 months they were all employed in different industries such as hospitals and cleaning companies and schools. With Saba's endless energy, warm-heartedness and ability to treat everyone as a lifelong friend, Mu'ooz Eritrean Restaurant & Catering has now trained and provided work experience for over 150 refugee African women. The business has grown both in size and reputation winning many awards, and it is now located in the vibrant, multicultural eating hub of West End.

Mu'ooz goes much further than providing food and training opportunities for African refugee women. I have attended a few functions over the years where Mu'ooz provided the catering. Saba offers a coffee ceremony as part of her catering business and is passionate when telling the story of not only how the coffee is made but also the cultural significance of the ceremony. There are also cooking lessons, art shows, painting classes and special fund-raising events available at Mu'ooz.

I went to an event last year that aimed to raise funds for a community development program in Africa. The funds raised were going toward continuing a program of teaching women karate to empower them in a culture where older women were being gang raped by young men with the belief they are less likely to carry the AIDS virus. This event was educational, inspirational, entertaining with great food. As well as the speaking and entertainment, traditional and very beautiful African clothes and other products were auctioned.

The Mu'ooz family would love you to join them in the celebration of their 10th birthday and all they have achieved to date and aspire to in the future. For $56, you will enjoy a three-course meal (entree, main and dessert), drink, inspirational speeches and entertainment. One of the entertainers is Fortune, an "amazing singer with an angelic voice that will leave you with goose bumps through-out her performance". You can book online here .

Mu'ooz is a soul food restaurant and you can be sure of a healthy and delicious Eritrean cuisine which is halal and includes gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options.
