Ever since arriving here in Munich I have always heard that people say it's a really beautiful city. Some even say it's the most beautiful in Germany. The downside is, Munich can be a little bit pricey for student backpackers. Fortunately, if you know where to go, you can explore the gems of this city for free.

1. Hofgarten

The weather has been really good lately and we've been given plenty amount of sun so it's a perfect time to do a little bit of picnic in Hofgarten, the royal gardens located at the back of Munich's Residenz. Grab a couple of beers and snacks on the way and lie in the grass or go to the pavilion for the goddess Diana at the center of the garden, where you can hear great live music performed by street musicians.

2. BMW Welt

Being the home of BMW, visiting the BMW Welt is a Munich must. It consists of three buildings, the BMW Headquarters, BMW Museum, and BMW Welt. For the entrance to the BMW Museum you need to purchase a ticket, but the entrance to BMW Welt is free of charge, and it's open for 24 hours. Inside of this uniquely shaped building you will see the newest BMW cars and motorbike as well as Rolls Royce and Mini Cooper. There are test drives inside the building from time to time, so when you're lucky you could see their newest electric car in action.

Just a five minute walk from BMW Welt is Olympiapark, home of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. This huge area consist of Olympiastadion, former stadium of FC Bayern, Olympia Lake, Munich Olympic Walk of Stars, Olympia Tower, etc. It is a perfect place for a picnic, jogging, or just sightseeing.

Take a picture with The New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus), the city's icon. Don't miss the Rathaus-Glockenspiel as it chimes and reenacts historical stories with its life-sized figures. You can also walk from Marienplatz to Karlsplatz, the road connecting these two landmarks is filled with shops and restaurants.

Rathaus-Glockenspiel show time:
Summer (March - October): 11 am, 12 pm, 5 pm
Winter (November - February): 11 am and 12 pm

Built in 2005, this stadium is the home of FC Bayern and a must see. Outside of match day the stadium will be closed, but you can still see the one-of-a-kind architecture from outside and there's also a FC Bayern store and FC Bayern Exhibition (with entrance ticket) inside.
