The new German styled beer hall come restaurant, at South Wharf has had a number of mixed reviews. And I have to say that I probably agree with both camps.
In some ways it seems a bit ridiculous like you have stumbled onto a film set.

There's a moose head on the wall as if you were in some hunting lodge and chandeliers that look like antlers. The waiters wear short pants and long socks and ridiculous little garters. Then there is the music out the front with yodeling and cow bells that makes you want to sit up the back.

But somehow you get into the spirit of it. I think the steins of German beer probably help. And somewhere during the night you stop thinking about the ridiculousness and start linking arms or swaying your glass in time to the beer drinking songs.

The food is wonderful stodge which is great fun every now and again especially on a cold night.

It is probably best described as comfort food. Huge pretzels served with pots of glistening butter, vast schnitzels, pork crackling and fat snags with mountains of mashed potatoes and rivers of gravy.

Like most people these days I try and eat healthy foods so I have to admit this made a nice change.

Some German men were sitting next to me and they gave it the thumbs up.

While it is quite touristy in its pricing the plates of sausage at $18 or so weren't too bad and in general the servings are so large that we were able to share three meals between the four of us and I don't think anyone was hungry when they collapsed into bed that night.

Service was "god awful." Entrees coming after meals and those waiters in dinky shorts forgot to come back just because we said "Wait a minute we are still looking at the menu."

But in spite of all this the experience somehow works. It is lively and jolly and very different that anything you would normally experience in Melbourne.

And because of the novelty the crowds are piling in.

This is definitely a place to go with a large group of friendly drinking buddies and definetely not an intimate place for a date night out.

Two tips:

The closest carpark seems to be the DFO carpark. This costs $8 an hour so don't forget to let the hostess know that you parked there as they can give you a card that gets you half price parking.

The second is don't drink the water. We were asked when we arrived if we wanted sparkling or still water. Naturally we said "still" as to us that means tap water. Not so, it seems. Later when paying the bill I noticed that the water cost $8.50. I assume a lot of people get stung like this. It might be a European necessity to pay for water but it is very unAustralian. Tourists perhaps don't realise that Melbourne has some of the best tap water in the world and are too easily duped. Locals of course know better.
