Fri 30 Mar 2012 - Sat 31 Mar 2012

If you are looking for a scenic drive in the hills and you love music, then the Inaugural Mundaring MusicFest on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 March could be just the ticket and, speaking of tickets, this event is free.

One of the highlights at the festival is the Madjitil Moorna or Magical Bush Sounds which was spawned in 2006 by the Zig -Zag Community Arts Inc in response to the awareness of the disparity between the opportunities for indigenous people and those from other communities. Since then the choral group has come along way with the honour of singing Kerry Fletcher's "Sorry" song at the WA Government's Parliamentary function for the National Day of Apology on February 13th 2008.

Led by award-winning singers and songwriters, George Walley, Della Rae Morrison and Jessica Lloyd, Madjitil Moorna sing in both English and Language. Their ethos is a blend of hope, joy, fun and harmony both musically and culturally, with both indigenous and non-indigenous members participation in the choir. They sing traditional aboriginal songs or modern songs with the universal themes of love, loss and joy. Anyone "who can sing in the shower" is welcomed to come and join them in their rehearsals, meeting most Monday nights at 6.30 for a cuppa and 7.00 to sing, at Anderson Road Community Centre, Forrestfield. Ring Jo Randell on 0409116 460 or contact Madjitil Moorna at www.madjitilmoorna.org.au

These songbirds have air time on Noongar radio, perform at numerous gigs throughout Perth, have cut cd's and are even on film. The harmony of their choral journey to Halls Creek was made into an uplifting documentary last year. This weekend they are on their way to sing at the inaugural Mundaring MusicFest taking place at the Amphitheatre at Sculpture Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Mundaring MusicFest gets underway on Friday evening at the Hub of the Hills at 8 Craig Street, Mundaring from 6.30pm to 8.30 with "Introduction to the 3B's", Beethoven, Bach and Brahms with live music and recordings. Feel free to take the family as it is not too late a night. The ABC recently had a survey into the memories of what started one's love affair with classical music. The responses were varied and interesting; hearing music in an interesting setting and experiencing the atmosphere often seemed to play a role in many of the recollections. You could imagine how hearing these three legends of classical music in a wonderful Western Australian bush environment in the autumn of 2012 could have an impact on the younger generation and give them a lifelong love of music and adults will love it too. Pianist Margaret Dylan Bradley and Harpist Rowan will play at the event. The event is BYO but tea and coffee is available.

On Saturday the action takes place at Sculpture Park with free hour-long workshops beginning at 12 noon with the 'Junk' Music Workshop where children will learn how to make and play musical instruments crafted from recycled materials. Learn the techniques of African Drumming from 1.00pm to 2.00pm. 'Youth Space' will be running all afternoon.

Bring a rug or cushion and maybe enjoy a picnic while being entertained at the Concert from 2.30pm until 6.30pm after you have strolled around the stalls. As well as the Aboriginal songs from Madjitil Moorna there will be many performers including local Hills Group The Merrics, and Red Triangle with contemporary punk rock.

As places are limited for the Music workshops and the Classical Music evening, you will need to register your interest by phoning Kay Bannerman on 92906682 or email [email protected].
