Mums Beard is a new addition to cafe choices in Victor Harbor. It's located the historic Freemason's 'Lodge of Peace' which dates back to the 1920s. I can only imagine how past occupants of this splendid building might view it in its current manifestation.

The decor is a far-cry from Masonic tradition and includes a wall of clocks. Of course, none portray the correct time for the zone they are in and why should they? It's always the right time for coffee.

The cafe also features a wall of fame for beardy patrons to aspire to.

Reminders of beard-related behaviour expectations are also on display.

The Mums Beard menu showcases delicious delicacies sourced from the Fleurieu Peninsula; DeGroote coffee and Wildfire Organic tea, local cheeses, pickles, pesto, bread and wine to name but a few. Small sharing plates include Slow Cooked Lamb Croquettes with mint onion jam and House Dips with sourdough and crispbreads. There are lots of vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free options for those of us with dietary considerations and I want to make a special mention here of the amazingly delicious, nutritious GF bread from Small World Bakery in Langhorne Creek.

It's almost a meal in itself yet perfectly paired with fresh beetroot hummus or Alexandrina cheese.

There is a selection of burgers, including a truffled mushroom version as well as smaller sliders and a seafood plate. My recent indulgence involved a local produce platter with cheddar, pickles, labneh, leg ham, olives and smoked almonds. I enjoyed each flavour along with the enhancement of a glass of crisp Rosé.

The dessert decision was difficult due to the appealing wide selection but I settled on an orange and poppy-seed muffin, accompanied by an excellent macchiato.

Mums Beard aims at high sustainability goals by creating minimal waste so I cooperated by eating every last morsel I was served.

The cafe is very popular and it's wise to book. If you visit on a Wednesday or a weekend you'll see the Cockle Train pass by, just outside the window, for your entertainment pleasure.
