Mummy: Secrets of the Tomb

As part of
Queensland Museum's 150th anniversary this year, it will host the British Museum's exhibition:
"Mummy: Secrets of the Tomb". Brisbane will be the only Australian city to host the touring exhibition, which will run from 19th April to 21st October.
Mummies give an unparalleled source of information, providing a unique insight into life in ancient Egypt. In the past, the only way to extract data from Egyptian mummies was to unwrap them, which was a very destructive process. Now, with modern non-invasive techniques such as X rays and CT scanning, it is possible to look inside a mummy without removing any of the wrappings. With the aid of computer technology, the British Museum has been able to perform a "virtual unwrapping" of the mummy of Nesperennub, a temple priest, who was embalmed in Thebes nearly 3000 years ago. Despite the mummy case never being opened, it is possible to explore the body within and even see the face of this man, who lived in a time before the birth of Christ.

A Unique 3D Experience
The exhibition is a 3-part experience. It begins with a 5 minute pre exhibition film explaining how modern technology is able to unlock secrets of Ancient Egypt. Then visitors will enter a 3D theatre for a 21 minute film about the virtual unwrapping of the mummy. After these presentations, you have the opportunity to view ancient objects related to Nesperennub's life. The main exhibit is the preserved mummy, in its coffin.
