Learning about other cultures is a great way to develop a better appreciation of the wonderful world we live in, and also enriches our own lives. After all, when we travel it's not only the scenery that captures our attention: it's also cultural traditions such as cuisine, music, dance and architecture that makes each place unique. Personally, I find that interacting with the local people and catching a glimpse into their lives is what distinguishes a bland package tour type of holiday from one that is really special.

The same goes here in Perth. Our sunny city is home to people from all around the world, and therefore we're in a great position to learn more about so many different cultures even if we don't travel much. Regular multicultural events which are held throughout Perth are great opportunities to taste fabulous international foods, appreciate cultural performances and perhaps even take part in workshops teaching traditional arts and crafts.

From October 7th to the 10th the University of Western Australia will be holding its Multicultural Week celebrations: a lively event which will include a variety of activities ranging from a haunted treasure hunt to a quiz night and international food fair. While some events will be only open to UWA students, others will also invite the participation of the wider community.

To find out more about the UWA Multicultural Week program go to their website or check out their Facebook page . Below, is a brief run-down of the main events.

Monday - October 7
Haunted Treasure Hunt: 6.00pm to 8.30pm
The big event of the day, held at the UWA Crawley campus, is the Haunted Treasure Hunt which will involve teams competing against each other and completing challenges in order to collect the greatest amount of treasure. Naturally, the team that hoards the most treasure will be the winner. To create a spooky ambiance, there will be monsters running around, scaring the contestants. This event aims to expose students to ancient cultures revolving around myth and the metaphysical, haunted realm.

Tuesday - October 8
Multicultural Week Opening Ceremony: 1.00pm
Taking place at the UWA Guild Village, this event will inaugurate Multicultural Week at the university and will feature speeches by the Vice Chancellor, the Multicultural Week Managing Director and an Indigenous Australian elder.

Centenary Games: 2.00pm until 5.00pm
This event will be situated on the UWA Oak Lawn and will be only open to students from the university. Loosely modelled on the Olympic Games (the ultimate multicultural sporting event), the UWA Multicultural Week Centenary Games will involve contestants, working in teams of two, to compete against each other in a series of mini-games. There will be prizes for the winners.

Wednesday - October 9
Quiz Night: 6.00pm until 9.00pm
This event will be located at the UWA Hackett Cafe and will involve teams of up to six people competing against each other to see who is the most knowledgeable. The winning team will receive some great prizes. Refreshments will be provided.

Thursday - October 10
Spring Feast: 6.00pm until 10.00pm
Now in its fifteenth year, the Spring Feast is the biggest event for UWA Multicultural Week. Featuring food from all around the globe, this event is open to both students and the general public and will be situated at the UWA Guild Village.
