It's been a long hot summer and now finally the temperatures are starting to drop one month into autumn. Soon we should be seeing the leaves on the trees changing to spectacular hues of yellow, orange and red and with the season change comes the opening of some wonderful private gardens in Mount Wilson.

Nine gardens will be open, some for the first time, allowing you to discover the beauty of nature in all its glory. Here's a quick rundown on each one:-

Bisley – 4 hectares with sweeping lawns, an amazing avenue of Alberta Spruce, a couple of lakes, clipped hedges, maples and tulip trees, and crab apples, all making a magnificent setting. Picnickers are welcome.

Breenhold – stunning parklands and stone walled gardens on 40 hectares with thousands of exotic trees and shrubs. You can take a bushwalk and listen to the trickling of water in fountains and pools. Very calming, make sure you see the star-shaped pool surrounded by pink flowers.

Cherry Cottage/Clarine – part of the historic Dennarque Estate, a series of interconnected garden rooms abound along with a Japanese Tea House.

Jalscene – is a true mountain garden with a rainforest in the lower hectare and a collector's garden in the higher, fenced area.

Merry Garth – a cold climate garden with winding paths and a nursery of rare plants, propagated from the garden. Flowering beds of crocus bulbs, cyclamen, camellias, alpine ground covers plus Himalayan magnolias and rare trees make this a sight to behold. There's a woodland walk and a rainforest walk, a children's lawn and a rock garden.

Nooroo – this historic park-like garden has chestnuts, oaks, cedars, maples and ash trees complemented with flowering rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and white nerines.

Sefton Cottage – 10 acres of rare and unusual plants with an autumnal garden, a cottage garden and a rainforest. Wander your way through secluded garden paths with a seemingly endless spectrum of colour.

Wildenstein – century old trees, exotic plantings, intimate sculpture-filled rooms and views stretching all the way back to Sydney. Look out for the Indian runner ducks on the romantic pond. A must see for garden lovers.

Withycombe – artist Patrick White's childhood garden is set on 8 acres with a seasonal flower garden, luxuriant roses against a stone wall, a grassy amphitheatre and over 70 tree species.

Entry to the gardens depends on how many you want to visit. For adults, one garden is $8, 3 gardens is $20 and if you want to and can get around to all of them then it is $40 online or $50 at the garden gate. Children 5-16yrs are $2 per garden or $10 for all gardens. Under 5 year olds are free.

If you're an artist and want to paint some breathtaking scenes, there is an art competition aptly named "En Plein Air" that you can take part in. For $10 you can paint in any of the above gardens. Register your choice of garden and pay online here . Judging will take place at the end of the day with three prizes awarded.

The Village Market in town will have all things garden for sale with plants and produce from mountain nurseries, quality garden tools, sculptures and garden ornaments. Arts and crafts are also available from local artisans as well as food and refreshments to keep you going.

Mt Wilson is a two hour drive from Sydney via Bell's Line of Road, with the turnoff between Bell and Berambing, making a great day out. Extend your visit, make a weekend of it and visit the heritage brick Turkish Bath Museum with its arched windows of stained glass and Italianate decoration, take in scenic views from various lookouts, go walnut or chestnut picking, and for some adventure try canyoning.

A beautiful area with lots of history.
