If you're off for a drive in the Adelaide Hills, then consider stopping for lunch at Mt Pleasant. It's a cute and historic little town set amid classic gum tree country at the top of the Torrens River. Just follow North East Road and it's less than an hour from most of Adelaide. Mount Pleasant is full of classic Australian country vibe, with antique stores, book stores, two pubs and a cosy little bakery and general store. Mt Pleasant Bakery Cafe and Store is super popular with cyclists touring the winding hills roads, especially on weekends. It's open for breakfast and lunch seven days until 4.30pm.



There's bright and airy outside seating on the footpath or on the balcony. Inside it's full of solid wood tables and benches and comfy leather chairs - even a little nook to while away the day with a coffee and newspaper. There's also a great little park just across the road with picnic tables, play equipment and rest rooms.



The first thing you notice when you enter is the grand display cabinet laden with sweet treats along the top and the ready to go rolls, wraps and quiches below. Up top, there's chocolate treats like Rocky Road (in interesting flavours like jersey caramel and liquorice allsorts), doughnuts, macaroons and slices. The range of wraps and rolls can be toasted for a little bit of tasty warming goodness on cold days.

The pie menu has rump steak, chicken, gourmet, and pasty and quiche sections. Some of the mouth- watering pie selections include Lamb, Rosemary and Red wine, Steak, Bacon, and Cream Cheese, Thai Chicken Satay, Butter Chicken, Chicken Kiev and my favourite, Surf and Turf. The kids are catered for with big, flaky sausage rolls. There's vegetarian stuff on the menu too, the spinach and feta rolls are excellent. Eat-in comes with plates and cutlery which makes it all a bit tidier and easier to savour the flavours of some the best pies in South Australia.

Let's not forget coffee. It's always a reliably robust and smooth cup of coffee here and worth stopping in for.

Once you're in Mt Pleasant, you can wander and explore the town, or cross the Torrens River on the rickety old footbridge to the park. Get back in the car and it's an easy drive over the hills to the Murray River at Walker Flat and Mannum or wind through Mt Crawford forest to Williamstown. Maybe you'll keep winding your way through the Eden Valley to Angaston and the Barossa Valley...



Avoid the heavy traffic on Main North Road and try this great alternative route to the Barossa Valley. It comes with the bonus of some well-kept secrets at Mt Pleasant.
