Mt Keira lookout in Wollongong is a popular landmark to get a great view of the city. More than 450 mt high, this beautiful lookout provides a view of the Wollongong shoreline, the Five islands bay and the mountains. The keen eye will be able to spot the pagoda and landscaping at the Nan Tien Buddist temple in Berkeley.
The drive through Mt Keira road is beautiful in sections, winding itself around many turns till you reach the lookout at the summit. Ample car park is provided at the summit.
Apart from the extensive views of Illawara region, there a many walking tracks at the top, some more rigorous than the others. The walks not only provide exercise, but are also a great way to see native plants and wildlife and some birds too. This lookout is not a busy tourist destination, so the peace and quite at the summit is a great way to relax while breathing in fresh air.
There is no cafe at the top which is a shame. Locals in the area informed us that there was one earlier that closed down. A midday coffee after the walk would have been perfect. Facilities in the area around the car park include toilets and picnic grounds with ample seating. Do carry enough water as there are no water fountains.
If you would like to get involved in the community lookup the Keira challenge which is a great way to participate in a climb to the lookout.
It also makes a great wedding location. You can lookup Mountain Top weddings for more information.
