Have you ever walked up the road to
Mt Gravatt ? On Sunday 5th June 2016, the mountain will come alive with a community event and challenge for family, friends and dogs with the added bonus of increasing your level of fitness while also enjoying the view from the top and along the route.
In 1893, the colonial government deemed 132 acres around Mt Gravatt a recreational reserve. Volunteers from the local residents gave their time to construct the roads and walking tracks up the mountain's slopes. The current road which leads to the top was built during the Depression by unemployed labourers. The lookout can be accessed by car or through the bush from the
Griffith University Campus and
Toohey Mountain Reserve.
The is in its fourth year and is predominately run by the
Mt Gravatt Rotary Club with the support from the
Lions Club of Greater Mt Gravatt/ Mansfield and
Southside Chamber of Commerce . Different from previous years, the cost of this year's registration will be a gold coin; with registration being paid on the day or to various sponsors including
Pet City in Mt Gravatt.
Participants can commence at the bottom of the mountain from 6.30am with the event commencing at 7.00am. Walkers can start at any time from 7:00 until 10:30am The road will re-open to normal traffic at 11:00am but stalls will remain at the top until 1:00pm.
The Rotary Club are currently discussing the possibility with local schools around the area to use this event as a fundraiser for their school and a Walk-a-thon for the children. Funds for the school will be collected from family and friends who will be asked to sponsor children to walk to the top .
Rotary is for women and men over the age of eighteen years. It is a service organisation that provides social gathering, business networking, supports projects that can change the lives of many both locally and internationally, supports youth development and supports community projects. It is a Worldwide organisation with a membership of over 1.2 million people globally. The Rotary Club of Mt Gravatt has been active in the local community since 1970.
At the Mt Gravatt Summit, the new
Love Well Project Cafe , being run by the Hope Foundation, is currently providing takeaway coffees & snacks through the kiosk. The cafe has future plans for patrons to rent a picnic box and hire a blanket for a romantic duo get-together. Hours for the cafe Tuesday to Saturday 09.00am to 3.00pm, Sunday & Monday are closed. All profits from the Love Well Project Cafe are being generated into initiatives to help vulnerable women.
As the road up to the mountain is only 1.5 klms, the event is not a hard feat by any means, yet gets you out of the house for a fresh walk to the top and excellent views of Brisbane when you get there. The road meanders around several corners giving walkers a chance for a stop if needed before continuing to the top. For only a gold coin registration, this is event we should all consider.
