Mrs S Highgate

Mrs S is somewhat of a Maylands institution now, having been open a few years (see WeekendNotes review
here ), but they have recently opened up a second location in Highgate, on the site of the former Solomon's cafe.
I visited on a Sunday afternoon with my stepdaughter Miss 9 and, while the all-day brunch menu looked very tempting, we were really only after a hot drink and something sweet.
Staff will seat you but you order at the counter - from the menus which are clipped inside Little Golden Books, how cute! Service was quick and friendly.
We were easily swayed by the HUGE chocolate croissants in the display fridge, although we did decide to behave ourselves and share it. There wasn't a large selection in the display cabinet but that may have been due to the late hour. I ordered a flat white and Miss 9 a hot chocolate. She was delighted that it came 'deconstructed', with the frothed milk and a jug of warmed chocolate syrup to add. Of course she added it all ("perhaps some people don't like it too chocolatey," she mused) and scraped every last bit out with a spoon ... sensible child.
The croissant was absolutely delicious - I almost regretted sharing - and we bought another one to take away for Miss 9's dad. The flat white was perfect - temperature, crema, strength and taste. Just as good as my perennial favourite, Mary St Bakery down the road.
Mrs S is a long and narrow cafe with extra seating past the kitchen down the back. Like many Beaufort St cafes this would make it a little tricky with a pram or any mobility aid.
I will be back to try the breakfast/brunch another day!
