When you say the words, stink, stank, stunk it seems quite funny, especially to kids. They love that kind of gutter humour and that's just one of the things they loved about this play. It's not all gutter humour though, no, it also covers so many topics that children can relate to; like bullies and being picked on at school, not getting on with a parents or siblings, feeling alone, lying and being kind, accepting differences. This production is excellent at portraying all of those themes in a cleverly engaging way that had the whole theatre laughing, clapping, booing and cheering throughout the performance. The play is based on best-selling children's author and comedian David Walliams. It is written by Maryam Master who has been writing plays for young audiences for the past 20 years and it is directed by Jonathan Biggins, the actor, singer, writer, director and comedian. With all of that experience going for it, naturally, it's a winner.
This really is a great production to take the kids to, they will enjoy it as much as their parents and I bet it will also encourage them to seek out more books to read by David Walliams, the biggest selling children's author to have started writing since the year 2000. Other titles of his include Gangsta Granny, The Boy in the Dress, Ratburger, Demon Dentist and The World's Worst Children. Mr Stink is at the Seymour Centre on February 27 and 28.
