Have you met Mr Burch? You would know if you had. He is a very distinguished, charming and popular fellow. Mr Burch is renowned for wearing a smart suits and a matching hat, he smokes a stylish pipe and hold a small transistor on his lap. Mr Burch welcomes you, sometimes startles you, but always invites you to enjoy a flavorsome breakfast, lunch or brunch in the comforts of his two story home.

Mr Burch is a vintage inspired cafe located at one end of the McKinnon Road shopping strip. It brings in locals and neighbours because of its cosy, homely and friendly atmosphere. I have been bringing my friends and family there for the longest time and if I was to ask my youngest where to go for a milkshake or a treat this is the cafe she would choose first time every time.

This place has small details dotted throughout that brings people back again and again. Things like warm lap rugs for when you sit outside, souvenir spoons in antique inspired sugar bowls and a beautiful open fireplace upstairs. Look out for quirky pieces too, a curtain made of old ties, an old telephone and meringue skirts on dollies in the bathroom which is worth a visit in itself with walls covered in vintage newspaper and magazine pages.

Not only is the setting stylish but the food tastes delicious. There's a decent sized menu and a daily changing specials board. The food has a multicultural feel to it and when I sit and breath in the full aroma wafting from the kitchen I can picture my mum cooking away in our childhood kitchen. Stand out dishes include the 'Burcher Muesli' for breakfast, anything on the specials board like the 'Durban Bunny Chow' or the sausage, polenta and tomato salsa.

I tried the 'Zaatar Mushrooms' with homemade hummus on olive toast and I was sold on the first bite. How have I never ordered this before? It was so scrumptious, the perfect combination of the salty olives, the tang from the hummus and the nutty mushrooms. My lunch mate decided upon the perfectly boiled eggs with thick, buttery sourdough soldiers.

The 'Supreme Blend' coffee is a big hit and it's not unusual to see people running in to grab a hot takeaway at 7am on their way to work. If coffee isn't your thing there are juices, teas, milkshakes and even a sneaky wine if you please. If possible leave a little room for a cake, slice or biscuit from the counter. They will be calling you.

Take a moment to enjoy some art and culture as well as Mr Burch presents the art work from a selection of local artists. They hang along the walls upstairs and are each paired with information about the artist for your perusal. If you see anything you like feel free to purchase it and hang it at home. They're all for sale and are all unique and interesting. Or if you prefer retail therapy there is a range of lovely jewellery on sale too for only $5 a piece. These include neck pieces with large stone pendants and earrings and bracelets too. They would make for a lovely gift for someone or why not spoil yourself? They can be a bit tricky to find so ask a friendly staff member to point them out.

If you're yet to become acquainted with the iconic Mr Burch make sure you stop by and introduce yourself. Do use a keen eye however as he tends to surprise visitors with small tweaks to his outfit to celebrate any occasion, maybe a plastic spider on his shoulder over Halloween or a Santa hat in December. Maybe he'll get into Spring with a flower in his pocket! Whatever it may be it's just one more reason to visit, not that you need anymore really.

Till next time Mr Burch!
