To read the CVs of Ensemble Q is to wonder what the rest of us have done with our lives. Adjunct and Associate Professors, QSO senior musicians, and guest musicians with top international orchestras. mall wonder Paul Dean said that it was his ambition when founding the ensemble "to have a gun in every seat".

Professors at local Universities, senior musicians in the QSO, soloists and guest musicians at great international orchestras - these CVs more than fulfil Paul Dean's ambition.

And then there is Daniel de Borah. Currently Head of Chamber Music at the Queensland Conservatorium his CV indicates an impressive international reputation. Struggling to come up with words to summarise his performance of Mozart's Piano Concerto No 17 in G Minor I came up with "controlled, intelligent, urgent, passionate, lyrical, virtuosic."

His formidable technique and understated posture made magic look effortless.

Each and every member of Ensemble Q contributed seamlessly to the whole. Paul Dean's clarinet playing has a gentle eccentricity, as his whole body bows into emphatic notes and he sways to the melody - but none of this detracts from the overall effect.

Unfortunately, I was unable to hear the Mahler due to being called away at the interval but I'm hoping to remedy that omission when the ABC broadcast the performance.

We should be both delighted and proud that Brisbane has musicians of this calibre.

I read that Paul Dean has a long bucket list of music that he wants Ensemble Q to perform and I very much hope that we get to hear them. Ensemble Q gives us world-class music and we must not take that gift for granted.
