Though its plot is uneven and episodic it has many fabulous scenes best seen as separate sketches and vignettes. The Gene Kelly sailor dance parody, and an Esther Williams style aqua-ballet performed by Scarlet Johansson are exceptional.
Lots of familiar actors turn up in blink and you'll miss them cameos. The cynical Rabbi is portrayed by Robert Picardo, who played a holographic Doctor in the Star Trek Voyager series for instance.
George Clooney's kidnapping and easy seduction into Communism is over-simplistic and never tense enough but for a film that isn't up to the sum of its parts, but the individual elements of this Curate's Egg of a movie are often pure gold.
