Western Australia's fast becoming a destination for movie-makers, attracting international stars such as Ewan McGregor and Simon Pegg in recent times. Apart from producing stars like Heath Ledger, Judy Davis, Sam Worthington and Melissa George, WA is blessed with fine weather and a wealth of natural and unique landscapes.

Watch some of the recent movies filmed right here in Perth, and see if you recognise some of the locations.

Here's a short list to get you started.

Kill Me Three Times (2014)

Kill Me Three Times is a black comedy directed by Kriv Stenders, best known for Red Dog. It stars British comedian Simon Pegg as a private investigator and contract killer who is hired by the well-to-do owner of a motel in the fictional seaside town of Eagles Nest.



Eagles Nest, is of course, the beautiful town of Lancelin just north of Perth. Lancelin Beach Hotel was transformed into The Rock Motel for the film (Gingin Shire media release dated 25 October 2013). Paper Planes (2014)

Paper Planes is a family movie about a boy from WA who is passionate about paper planes, about family and dreams. The movie was filmed in Japan and Western Australia (including at the WA Athletics Stadium in Floreat, pictured below, where Kimi practised her cart-wheel throw).



Other filming locations in Perth include the Aviation Heritage Museum in Bullcreek, Whiteman Park, and the HBF Stadium in Mount Claremont.

The Sydney yacht scene was filmed right here in WA, at the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, Peppermint Grove (Paper Planes (2014) Filming Locations, retrieved from IMDB ).

Son of a Gun (2014)

Son of a Gun is about JR (Brenton Thwaites), a young man in prison, and Brendan (Ewan McGregor), an older inmate that JR gets to know.



Filmed in Australia, Perth locations include Casuarina Prison, Sunset Hospital in Dalkeith, and Astrolodge Motel on Albany Highway in Cannington (Son of a Gun (2014) Filming Locations, retrieved from IMDB ). Crush (2009)

Movies filmed in Perth are not limited to black comedies, family movies and thrillers. Crush is a horror movie about Julian, an international university student who house-sits for wealthy owners of a luxurious home. You would be hard pressed not to recognise the view of Perth taken from the South Perth foreshore...



or the University of Western Australia where Julian's girlfriend, Clare, speaks to Julian on her mobile.



These Final Hours (2014)

The horror theme continues with apocalyptic movie These Final Hours which sees Perth devastated. One scene, filmed on the corner of Ewen Street and Sydenham Street in Doubleview, shows Perth burning in the distance (Comment dated 19 February 2014, retrieved from Gizmodo ).

Japanese Story (2003)

Japanese Story stars Toni Colette as Sandy, a geologist who accompanies Hiromitsu, a Japanese business man on a road trip to the Pilbara. The movie showcases the magnificence of outback Western Australia. It was filmed in the Pilbara, Port Hedland, Perth and Perth Airport (Japanese Story (2003) Filming Locations, retrieved from IMDB ).

St Georges Terrace can be seen through the window of Sandy's offices.



Bran Nue Dae (2009)

Bran Nue Dae is a musical comedy/drama set in the late 1960's directed by Rachel Perkins. It is a coming-of-age film about Willie, an Aboriginal teenager who finds himself on a road trip. The movie was filmed in Broome, Kununurra, Perth and Fremantle (Bran Nue Dae (2009) Filming Locations, retrieved from IMDB ).



The Dingo Flour sign, Stirling Highway, North Fremantle can be seen in the background as the Kombi races away from Fremantle.
