Mountain River Patisserie

What started in a tiny, shared kitchen in Salisbury is now a flourishing, popular stand-alone café in Runcorn. Since moving to their own bigger space in April, it hasn't taken long for crowds to gather, often forming queues outside on busy weekends.

Mountain River Patisserie is a Japanese-inspired café run by a husband and wife team, Sing and Befian. Following their motto, "the best way to live in this life is by travelling", pâtissier Sing creates unique desserts to bring a piece of each corner of the world to Brisbane locals. These delicious treats are shaped from the couple's memories and flavours tasted while travelling the world.

A warm and welcoming space is provided, inviting their customers to slow down for a while in the café. Sit down, sip on a matcha latte and enjoy their food. You can relax and appreciate the beautifully decorated space - rustic, minimalistic, drawing on inspirations of traditional Japan. The food is served on handmade pottery goods and there are many more local artisan goods placed on display for customers to admire. If you like it enough, you can purchase it to take home.

Sustainability is very much encouraged here. If you have a reusable bag or cup, please bring it along to reduce disposable waste.

For a first time visit, the matcha latte is a must-try. It's a delicious blend using high quality Tsujiri Matcha imported from Japan, which has been labelled the 'masterpiece of tea' from Uji, Kyoto. Treat yourself to a signature Hokkaido cheesecake which is made so light and fluffy. Or indulge in a canele. These staples have remained on the new menu in a range of flavours including matcha, hojicha, black sesame, Hong Kong style milk tea, taro and sweet potato. Return week after week to explore them all!

For those after something a little more substantial, there are savoury snacks available. Choose from yummy onigiri (rice balls) or the delicious vegetarian nori roll which is made with vegan meat floss! (I highly recommend) Recently added menu items also include kimchi quiches, which seems a popular hit.

For anyone who is going to the Matsuri Japanese Festival this Saturday 3 Sept, Mountain River Patisserie will be introducing their new Unamusubi onigiri also known as Grilled Eel onigiri. It will be held at the Mount Gravatt Showgrounds from 11am – 5pm.

Mountain River Patisserie is a beautiful café, well worth the hype but do watch out for the 10% weekend surcharge. This is clearly stated on their menu and they have explained this is to pay their staff on weekends. Dine in hours are from 8am– 3pm, Tuesday to Sunday. If you prefer to avoid the weekend crowd, you could grab a morning coffee and relax before starting work or pop in for a little afternoon wind down. Takeaway is also available until 5:30pm on most days.

I can see why it has grown and gone from strength to strength. What a good success story.
