Mount Majura Vineyard is a small winery just outside of Canberra. Their unique wines make the most of their location, not only on the slope of the mountain, but also the cool climate of the Canberra and surrounds wine region. Their cellar door is open 5 day a week from 10am till 5pm, but they are closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. Mount Majura was the ACT's first winery, and is a lovely spot with some very good wines.

If you don't know too much about wine, or if you're just starting to explore the cool climate wine region, then Mount Majura is probably the best place to start. They can tell you all about the surrounding wine producing region, and how it differs from others all around Australia. You can tell that they have a real passion for wine. Learning about what affects the flavour of wine, from its location, barrels, and process, you'll come to any future wineries with a lot more knowledge. You can take a Gumboot Tour which will allow you to take a tour through the winery, and find out more about it.

One of the best ways to get to know a winery is through its tastings. Mount Majura offer a seated tasting, which allows you more time to appreciate the wine and taste its flavours. There are plenty of wines on the menu to try, and some like the Graciano, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir, and Tempranillo take full advantage of the cool climate, and are among Mount Majura's specialties. All of their wines are single-vineyard wines, so when you try one you are really getting a taste for what they do.

Mount Majura is a beautiful place to spend the afternoon, so come prepared with a picnic to enjoy, or pick up a tasting platter and a bottle of wine from the cellar door. You'll get a view of the vineyards and the mountain, and can sit back and relax for a bit. There are tables and chairs available, or you can pull up a blanket on the grass.

Mount Majura should be on anyone's list if they're heading through the cool-climate region, and even if you're not taking wine tour it is a worthwhile stop over between Canberra and Sydney. Not only do they have some great wines to taste and buy, but you really will learn so much more about the cool-climate wine region.

Mount Majura is a short 15 minute drive from Canberra, and a 3 hour drive from Sydney. Pick up a brochure of the Cool Climate Region to find some more wineries in the area.
