A midst the stunning surrounds of beautiful Mt Macedon homes and open gardens, and close to Hanging Rock and Sanatorium Lake, galleries and nurseries, is the Trading Post Café, General Store, Post Office and Wine Store. This is a great spot to stop for a big home cooked meal and to shop for giftware.
Specialising in coffee and award winning pies, local produce and wines, the Trading Post Café is also the home of Mt Macedon Kitchen preserves, biscuits, cakes and biscuits. These are produced on-site where possible from locally sourced, organic vegetable gardens with fresh seasonal ingredients. For example, they use Kyneton Olive Oil and Musk Istra Smallgoods and stock Spotted dog fudge from Woodend and The Good Loaf Breads from Bendigo.
If we hadn't got lost on the simple route back to Melbourne, we would never have discovered this quaint little cafe in Mount Macedon. Out the front, it looks like it might be closed but inside there is a world of activity and decadent gourmet foods and treats. At the back of the store is a post office. I'm assuming this has been there for very long time.
We sat in the comfy window seat and observed that there was an eclectic combination of furniture (a combination of rustic, cottage and industrial styles) and the walls were crammed with shelves of wine, homemade sauces and other delicacies and giftware.
The food is homemade and if our samplings were delicious. My friend loved the thick Pea and Ham Soup (served with toasted sourdough $12). I had a scrumptious Vegetarian Pastie ($6.40) and my son had the fattest homemade Sausage Roll that I have ever seen (also $6.40). He quickly devoured it but was not impressed by the homemade tomato soup … it just wasn't commercial enough for him. This comment is not a criticism of any of the homemade products, it's just more of a reflection on my son's taste.
The Trading Post cafe sells the following local wines and beers such as Epis, Bindi50, Vines, Paramoor, Granite Hills, Cobaw Ridge, Mt Towrong and Holgate Brewery. They sell my favourite bread: Phillippas Breads and Pastries and gluten free Passion Pasta.
