Mount Macedon is best known for its impressive Memorial Cross but it's also home to some very historic homes and gardens.

With autumn upon us this is a fabulous time of year to head to 'The Mount' to witness an incredible explosion of colour in some of the State's finest gardens, many listed by the National Trust.
Standout autumn attractions include:-

Forest Glade

Reborn from the devastation of the Ash Wednesday fires of February 1983 Forest Glade is today one of Mount Macedon's, indeed Victoria's, great gardens.

Covering 5.6 Hectares it's home to exotic trees, a Japanese garden and bonsai house, beautiful woodlands, fern gullies, a topiary garden, a must-see laburnum arch, pergolas & ponds and some amazing statues and fountains.

Anytime is a great time to visit Forest Glade but the garden gives up particularly amazing displays of colour in both spring and autumn. Masses of rhododendrons, peonies and azaleas are highlights of spring while autumn explodes in yellows, oranges and reds as the deciduous trees and bushes prepare to shed their leaves for winter.

Event the hot summers and very cold winters reward visitors to this, one of Australia's great gardens.

Cost of entry Adults $10

Tieve Tara

This property dates back to 1854 when it was owned by Mr W. Christian and known as Christians Orchard.

It's changed hands several times over the years, purchased by present owners John and Judith Brand in October 1995.

The original house was destroyed by fire in 1962 and its replacement was again burnt out and most of the gardens severely damaged in the Ash Wednesday fires.

The original garden was laid out in the early 1860's and amazingly, despite the ravages of fire, many of the original old trees remain today.

The Brands have worked hard to build on earlier improvements to the property to create the beautiful garden we see today.

It features picturesque top and bottom lakes, rolling lawns, a rose walk & arbour, many beautiful garden beds and a children's playground dubbed 'Treasure Island'.

Cost of entry is $10 – Children under 12 years free.

The gardens open from 1st March to 31st May Weekdays 10 AM to 4 PM and Weekends & Public Holidays 10.30 AM to 5 PM.

Duneira

Duneira was built in 1875 by Suetonius Henry Officer, its gardens developed and improved by 3 owners before being purchased by its last owner Stuart Stoneman in 1992.

Stoneman, who introduced self-service grocery shopping to regional Victoria, filled Duneira with his very valuable art collection. He died in 2002 leaving the estate to the public through the establishment of the Stoneman Foundation which today still opens the property to philanthropic events and public inspection.

Duneira is rich in history. It includes an antique book collection, furniture, Persian rugs, Stoneman's incredible art collection and a heritage garden dating back to 1872.

It is truly an amazing place to visit and features a list of seasonal events far too long to be detailed here. Visit www.duneira.com.au for full detail.

The property is only open to the public during events listed on the events calendar, by appointment or private booking.

Cost of entry varies from event to event.

The gardens of Mount Macedon are incredibly lush at the moment thanks to a very wet spring in 2016 and a relatively mild and wet summer. Autumn 2017 promises to be bigger and better than ever – an incredible explosion of colour not to be missed.
