Mount Lofty summit is one of the popular attractions in Adelaide for both locals and tourists. As the highest point in the southern Mount Lofty Ranges, tourists head here to admire the sweeping views of the Adelaide plains. But there's many more fun things to do than just gaze at the views.

Mount Lofty Summit Lookout
Mount Lofty summit lookout is 710 metres above sea level and has panoramic views of the metropolitan area, with attractive vistas of the Piccadilly Valley to the east. The lookout is home to an obelisk built in 1885 called Flinders Column, which was commemorating the explorer Matthew Flinders who named the ranges in 1802.

There is helpful interpretive signage describing the main features of the views of Adelaide at the Mount Lofty summit lookout, and also maps of the walking trails around the summit.

Mount Lofty Summit Restaurant and Cafe
Mount Lofty Summit Cafe is open 7 days a week, but the restaurant is only open for dinner from Wednesday to Saturday. After completing the Mount Lofty Summit walk, or a part of the Heysen Trail through Cleland Wildlife Park I could certainly sit down for a hearty meal at the cafe. It's welcoming, light and airy inside, and takes advantage of the summit views.

There is also the Mount Lofty gift shop and visitor information centre - a good place for tourists to pick up mementoes of their visit and learn about other attractions in Adelaide.

Mount Lofty Summit Walk
The Mount Lofty summit walk to Waterfall Gully is one of the fun things to do at Mount Lofty and very popular in both directions. It has some steep sections, but with a cafe at both ends you can unwind nicely with a great coffee and maybe even a pastry.

An alternative Mount Lofty hike is from scenic Piccadilly , allowing you to avoid parking problems at Waterfall Gully during busy periods. Or try the walking trails using the Roclin Loop Track for something different again.

Keen mountain bike riders can take advantage of the shared use trails and ride through Cleland Conservation Park .

Cleland Wildlife Park
Less thank two kilometres from Mount Lofty Summit Lookout is the enormously popular Cleland Wildlife Park . Get up close with friendly native animals and colourful native birds - it's fun for kids during the school holidays, and the perfect way for overseas tourists to see our wildlife. It's not free to visit but it's one of the fun things to do that will leave you with lasting memories.

Mount Lofty Botanic Garden
The Mount Lofty Botanic Garden is a spectacular Adelaide Hills garden just down the road from Mount Lofty summit. Admission is free but you may not bring pets into the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden . Take the Heysen Trail through, or follow one of the other recommended walking trails .

Other Nearby Attractions in Adelaide Hills
Mount Lofty House is a beautiful example of South Australia's built heritage. It offers luxury accommodation in Mount Lofty and fine dining with wonderful views of the Mount Lofty Ranges.

Also nearby is Arthur's Seat , the ruins of a historic mansion that was ruined in the Ash Wednesday bushfires. Unfortunately it is not open to the public as it is on private property, however its history is fascinating.

Getting to Mount Lofty Summit
Getting to Mount Lofty summit is easy by car along the South Eastern Freeway or by public transport on the Adelaide Metro bus, with stop 26 conveniently close to the summit. There is a small charge of a few dolars for using the summit car park.
