South Australia is lucky to have three Botanic gardens - in Adelaide, at Mount Lofty, and the Wittunga Botanic Garden at Blackwood. While Adelaide Botanic Garden opened in 1857, the idea of the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden was not considered until 1911, and planting of the first trees there started from 1959. The new gardens were finally opened to the public in 1977.

Previously the garden's land played host to private homesteads, market gardens, orchards and silver-lead mines, while before European settlement much of the Mount Lofty Ranges were inhabited by the Peramangk Aboriginal people.

This year Mount Lofty Botanic Garden celebrates its 40th birthday. The garden has been steadily growing in popularity over the years, and the first blooming of the corpse flower brought a huge number of visitors in 2015. The beautiful autumn foliage colours produce a stunning display at Mount Lofty, and this also attracts an evergrowing crowd of visitors.

On Sunday November 5 you can expect quite a crowd at Mount Lofty to join in the Botanic Garden's birthday free celebrations. From 10am until 3pm there are loads of free things to do for all ages at Mount Lofty Botanic Garden
  • free live music entertainment from Adelaide Big Band, ABB All-Stars and ABB Revue
  • nature play activities for kids
  • fantastic fresh food and wine from your favourite food trucks and a licensed bar
  • tasty wine and cider from local Adelaide Hills producers
  • native plants on sale from State Flora and the Fern Society of South Australia
  • free guided walks of the Garden showcasing cool climate plants

  • All the birthday celebrations are happening in the picnic area near the lower car park, but be aware that parking in the area is a bit limited. If you park at Crafers Park 'n' Ride you can take a free shuttle bus to Mount Lofty Botanic Garden anytime between 10am to 3pm. What a great way to avoid the stress of hunting for a park.

The Mount Lofty Botanic Garden's Facebook page will have the latest updates on their 40th birthday celebrations, or you can click over to the website for more details. Please note that you can't bring pets (including dogs), BBQ's or alcohol to any botanic garden.

If you're still looking for something to do after the party finishes at 3pm, why not check out some of the other Mount Lofty attractions ? There's plenty of things to see and do nearby.
