I had been to Lake Wyaralong three times before a recent trip. The first time I kayaked up the lake and visited the Ngumbi Base Camp.

The second time I walked in and camped overnight at the Base Camp and climbed Mt Joyce.

On the third trip, we had to change our plans because the Ridge Trail was closed, so we did some other walks nearby.

On this fourth trip, we did an anticlockwise loop up Mt Joyce, then over the mountain and down the other side. We then followed the Shoreline Track to Ngumbi Base Camp, where we had lunch. We covered 20 kilometres before we ended back at the Eastern Trail Access car park where we had left our cars.

The last time, I was on the top of Mt Joyce, there was no view because it was raining and very cloudy. This time there was a view of the lake but the mountains were a bit obscured by haze. In really clear weather, people can see lots of the mountains of the Scenic Rim including Mt Barney, Ernest, Maroon, Lindsay, Mitchell and Cordeaux.

After climbing up the side of the mountain and over the top, we headed along the ridge down to a saddle and down to the Shoreline Trail.

I found this walk fairly tough. It was a very hot day and I puffed up the mountain. I had had some stomach virus a few days before the walk, which probably made it harder than usual.

Wyaralong dam is constructed on Teviot Brook, approximately 14 kilometres northwest of Beaudesert in the Logan River catchment.

Mount Joyce is the highest point of the range that dominates the northern skyline from the Boonah Beaudesert Road. The mountain can also be seen from Mt Lindsay Highway on the way to Beaudesert.

It is a beautiful area and I will go back again but may wait for cooler weather next time. I would also love to go kayaking on the lake again sometime.
