Tharrapatha is the Kalkadoon (local Aboriginal) language that means the river. The local name for Leichardt River, which runs parallel to the pathway, is also Tharrapatha. The walking trail that had been built since 2011 is a symbol to connect Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people in Mount Isa.

Most of the trail is cemented but some parts were damaged by a flood in the wet season, so closed cap walking shoes must be worn for your safety. During rain season, this trail can be muddy and a bit slippery.

You can also see some community art projects along this trail, such as painted Aboriginal-themed artwork on 30 power poles that surely brighten up this trail. Native gardens also have been built by members of the local community and have been maintained by Youth Justice and Lake Eyre Basin Rangers. This walking trail will teach you about local plants, animals and some of Aboriginal culture with interpretive signs.

Many people from wider community in Mount Isa have been using this walking trail for many purposes, from exercises (walk, jog, cycle) to bird watching. Some community events also had been using this trail, such as Clean Up Australia and Walk with Paws by local Rotary Group. Over the years, has slowly but steadily been coming to life.
