Mount Duneed Estate / Winery
Mount Duneed Estate has gone through a few name changes, and has an interesting history. Once known as the Pettavel Winery and Restaurant, then The Hill Winery, Mount Duneed Estate is set on a hilltop, overlooking acres of lush grapevines.
History of the Winery
In 1842, David Pettavel, a Swiss winemaker, settled in the area of Geelong and pioneered the planting of vines and making of wines. The Geelong wine region was one of the largest wine regions in Australia back in the 1860s, exporting to Europe and producing award winning wines. The wine industry was halted abruptly in 1875 due to an outbreak of the vine pest phylloxera. The Victorian Government ordered the removal of all vines due to the outbreak.
There was a long break in vine growing and wine producing after this. In 1996 there was a realization that Geelong could become a premium wine growing region again. Today Geelong has more than 150 vineyards. Geelong wines are widely acclaimed as world class wines.
In 1987, Geelong Winery Estate, trading as Pettavel Vineyard, was re-established. The Vineyard / Winery sits on a 3 kilometre frontage to the Moorabool River. The Winery is set on 129 acres of land.
The wine brand Pettavel was named in 2002 to commemorate Mr David Pettavel. David Pettavel was the man who pioneered wine making in the area. He also played a role in the renaissance of Geelong region wines.
The Mount Duneed Estate produces high quality, cool climate Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet, Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Reisling and Merlot.
Mount Duneed Estate is available for functions, conferences, breakfast, lunch and dinner, cocktail events and wedding packages, with the vineyard providing a backdrop for photography.
