I'd always wanted to walk up Mt Coolum and recently I achieved this. I couldn't believe how busy the track was, with people arriving every few moments to either walk (up the many stone steps) or 'run' up them. It was obvious that some people use this wonderful track as part of their exercise regime and one had to be careful to get out of the way as they ran down - said hill. It was a slower pace for me, with my friend Kath because after all, we had plenty of chit chat to catch up on.

The sign down at the bottom of the climb says 'bring water' and that it takes 'about 2 hours'. Yet Kath had told me she had done this mountain climb in 20 minutes. How is that possible? There is a huge difference between 2 hours and 20 minutes. I'll let you in on a secret - it's all to do with how fit you are! We began our walk and climbed up into this majestic mountain with it's many stone steps and a track that is extremely well maintained with only a couple of 'pant' stops along the way. (That also could have been because we were endlessly talking and needed to take a breath!) I like to think we must be pretty fit. It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be.

I was most impressed with how many families and children were walking up and down this mountain. Admittedly it was a Saturday afternoon but kudos to the parents who walked with their children up this hill. This is one family outing that would definitely be a bonding experience. And the views from midway were pretty outstanding.

It took us about 20 minutes to climb up to the top where we decided to sit and chill for a bit. I was surprised at the amount of people I saw running (and walking) up and down without a water bottle in sight. Exercise = water.

This was what we were wanting. An amazing view - from all directions. Breathtaking, beautiful, a true natural wonder in our own sunshine coast back yard. As the Nike ad so eloquently puts it
'Just Do It' ....

It only took about 10 minutes to get back down, where we felt refreshed and relieved yet eager to do it all again another day. I would recommend a picnic snack, but at the very least do take some water with you
