A historic site full of water
Located on Mount Bold Road, near Kangarilla in the southern suburbs, this dam is not only an important water supply to Happy Valley and the Mount Lofty Ranges, it is also South Australia's largest reservoir, and a pretty impressive one!
Built between 1932 and 1938 on the Onkaparinga River System, this 46,180 mega litre dam diverts water to Happy Valley, Mount Lofty Ranges and even Adelaide. It also supplied electricity from 1938 to 1961 through a small hydro electric system.
Visiting this site is an educational experience for children and adults. You can see the entire dam from above or take a small downhill hike and appreciate the immense structure from the hanging bridge. Helpful information signs have been placed around to show you how the pumping system works and where our water comes from.
