Mount Billy Walking Trail

I wasn't familiar with Mount Billy, in the Hindmarsh Valley, until recently when I fancied a new walk. The Fleurieu is full of scenic seaside walks and rustic river walks but it's nice to add a bit of woodland variety from time to time, don't you think?
My research informed me that there was a 4.9km circuit known as The Mount Billy Hike with multiple entry points on Hindmarsh Tiers Road, not far from Victor Harbor.
I chose Gate 2 as there was a small, adjacent car park, and set off to enjoy nature in a different walking location.
An information board told me what to expect; Sheoaks, Gums, wildflowers and a summit of about 260m above sea level. I prepared to challenge my walking legs.
The Banksia Hike is a loop within the loop and stretches for only 2.6kms. It's a good option if you prefer a more moderate walk but I decided to test my fortitude and take the longer path.
In the manner of all conservation parks, the atmosphere was serene. Birdsong was all I could hear and I felt relaxed in the beauty of nature.
There was an abundance of gums and other trees as well as colourful flowers to enjoy.
I noticed a lot of butterflies also.
I felt slightly less relaxed as I started the ascent and challenged my leg muscles. The view at the top, however, was worth the effort. I could see past Victor Harbor as far as The Bluff with plenty of rolling, green hills along the way.
Since the hike is a circuit, you can choose to walk either way. I chose to walk clockwise. Whichever way you choose be warned that there is an ascent and a descent. It's rated as a 'moderate' hike on the walking websites and is certainly not as steep as Mt Lofty, for example.
I welcomed the sight of a bench where I sat and contemplated nature at one point.
The last stretch for me (and those who walk clockwise from gate 2) skirted the Hindmarsh Tiers Road.
The information board had suggested a timeframe of two hours to complete this circuit. It took me slightly less time, including a contemplative rest on a bench.
