Wholesome Affordable Fun For The Whole Family
Springtime is a season of great natural beauty in the Adelaide Hills. After the long cold months of winter, its warm days and regular rainfall herald in an abundance of beautiful wildflowers, and local parks and gardens are at their most lush and attractive. The perfect weather of spring also makes it a popular time for community groups to hold public events, and every weekend a myriad of fetes, fairs and carnivals can be discovered throughout the area. Taking place on October 29th, the Mount Barker Waldorf School Spring Fair is shaping up to be one of the most unique of these events, with a super assortment of exciting things to do and goodies to buy on the big day.

Waldorf schools, also known as Steiner schools, after their founder, German educator Rudolf Steiner, first came into being almost a century ago and emphasise the importance of imagination and creativity in the education of children - an ethos that is clearly apparent in the Mount Barker Waldorf School Spring Fair. A classic spring fair, there is plenty to see and do for people of all ages and interests. Small children will enjoy exploring the glittering treasure cave and the fun Fishing Dip that has been set up to challenge them, while adults wanting to do some early shopping for Christmas will enjoy perusing the well-stocked artisan and other stalls.

The annual fair is popular with visitors from far and wide, with many making it a regular event on their social calendars, visiting year after year. A major drawcard of the fair is its emphasis on wholesome old-fashioned fun and environmental sustainability. Traditional fair-time fun such as maypole dancing, traditional games (such as three-legged and egg-and-spoon races) and an apple crush are also firm favourites, along with market stalls selling everything from healthy snacks and handicrafts, to plants and second-hand clothing. Eftos facilities are available for those who prefer cash-free shopping.

There is also plenty of family-friendly entertainment to be enjoyed throughout the course of the day. In addition to exhibitions of the student's art and music, there will also be acoustic music and garden talks by well-known gardening experts and authors, Sophie Thomson and Lolo Houbein. Tours of the school's beautifully tended grounds are also extremely popular each year. Waldorf education emphasises the role of nature in the development of a child's inner life, and the tour provides the special opportunity to gain an insight into this nourishing child-centred style of learning.
