It doesn't have to be Anzac Day to appreciate the Mothers Memorial Gardens in East Creek Park. On a hill beside a sparkling fountain, the gardens were proposed to Council by the 'mothers' of Toowoomba and were installed in 1922.
Moved from the city centre to the park in 1985, its memorials have expanded to include the Mothers Memorial, Boer War Memorial, Royal Australian Navy Memorial, Siege of Tobruk Memorial, Women's Royal Australian Air Force Memorial, Royal Australian Air Force Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, National Service Memorial, Lone Pine Memorial and 25th Battalion Memorial listing battlefields.[BREAK]
The Mothers Memorial honours the men who didn't return from WWI. The base of its eight metre column bears the names of service personnel from Toowoomba, Yalangur, Westbrook, Wyreema, Gowrie Junctions and Meringandan. The conflicts commemorated are: South Africa War, 1899-1902; First World War, 1914-1918; Second World War, 1939-1945; Korean War, 1950-1953; and Vietnam War, 1962-1972.
The Anzac Centenary Wall features photographs of soldiers and commemorates the armed forces over the past one hundred years. The wall is also intended to provide positions for any future plaques.
The Margaret Street side of the Gardens displays a three-bladed propeller which was fitted to a Boston A20 aircraft which saw service in Papua New Guinea.
Pine trees are a backdrop to a granite sculpture of a soldier in memory of the members of 25 RQR who gave their lives for their country. The pines were cultivated from Lone Pine, Gallipoli and planted on Anzac Day 1987.[BREAK]
For much of the year, red and white roses line the paths of the Mothers Memorial where you may take a seat for quiet reflection.
East Creek Park is also a retreat in the city for family games, picnics, barbecues or simply to enjoy a walk.[BREAK]
There is ample parking around the park bordered mostly by Burstow, Kitchener and Margaret Streets.
If you're on foot or bicycle you may follow the East Creek cycle route by the trees and ponds, even from as far away as Spring Street.
