Nothing says, "I love you, Mum" more than... a trip around the world? Well, Mum's worth the $40 000 price tag right? In case you can't get the 53 days off of work this year, I've included a few alternative gift ideas in this Ultimate Splurges and Saves Guide to Mother's Day in Melbourne.

The Foodie:

Splurge 1: For $495 per person, you and Mum can have an intimate evening at Vue de Monde, discovering the three faces of Dom Pérignon with Vincent Chaperon, Winemaker. Canapes and a five course degustation inclusive. Bookings essential.

Splurge 2: For a mere $290 per adult, you can dine in style at ezard. The eight course degustation tasting menu with matching wines will start you with a Japanese inspired oyster shooter, cucumber, apple and yuzu, take you through France, Italy, and China, and land you in a gastronomical coma back in Melbourne as you cleanse your pallet with a 2011 weingut rebholz gewurztraminer spatlese, pfalz, (German wine).

Save: If your Mother's Day celebration is going to include children of the "under 10" variety, check out this fantastic resource of Warm Winter Restaurants With Playgrounds. If the kids are happy, Mamma's happy; Mamma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!

Scrimp: On the penny-pinching, chin-wiping, finger-licking-good side, there's really only one question: Andrew's or Danny's? I'm going with Andrew's Hambugers Traditional Burger Grill, because they have a gluten free bun option, and hey, they've been around for over 70 years, they've gotta' be on to something, right? Either place will get you and your Mum fed, for under $25, all inclusive.

The Tea Toddler:

Splurge 1: Afternoon tea on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 12, 2.30-4.30pm, Clarendon Ballroom, Langham Hotel, Southbank. $125 per adult includes sparkling wine upon arrival (children $75).

Splurge 2: The Hotel Windsor: Morning and afternoon teas will be held in the famous Grand Ballroom, the Bourke Room, and the 111 Spring Street Restaurant. This will set you back $99 per adult, $65 for children 7 to 12 years old, and $45 for children aged three to six.

Save: Check out Lesley's selection of High Teas under $40 here. Honourary mention: By Josephine in Brunswick (gluten-free option available), $42/person; bookings essential.

The Techie and The Book Worm:

The Techie:

Splurge: Rumour has it that Apple is coming out with a new iPhone in June (possibly September from historical trends). If Mum is okay with delayed gratification, an IOU note may buy you some time. Approximate cost: 16GB $900AU.

Save: A personalized case for Mum's phone will warm her heart, and won't leave your wallet cold and bare either at the under $20 price tag.

The Book Worm:

Someday in Mum's Dreams: The Tales of Beedle the Bard, J.K. Rowling: $4 million: J.K. Rowling has handwritten and illustrated seven original copies of The Tales of Beedle the Bard. One was snapped up by Amazon.com for a handsome sum of $3.98 million, making it the most expensive modern manuscript ever purchased at auction (the money from the sale of the book was donated to The Children's Voice charity campaign).

Splurge: Head to Daylesford for a beautiful day trip. Treat Mum to some fresh scones with tea and jam, and a new or not-so-new rare book from the Book Barn. While we're splurging, why not include a gorgeous bamboo daydream blanket to curl up with while she's reading that new book (aden anais, classic cotton: $136.36, bamboo: $172.73)?

Save: Library memberships are free! If that's a bit too tight-wad for you, Costco has great prices on books.

The Chocoholic:

Splurge: The Aria at the Langham offers every texture and variety of chocolate imaginable outside of Willy Wonka's factory itself. The Chocolate Indulgence is $59 (weekdays) and the Chocolate Bar is $79 per person (weekends). Be sure to check the dates of availability on these; due to Mother's Day events, prices and booking availability may change.

Scrimp 1: You certainly can't go wrong at Max Brenner, with nine locations across Victoria, and desserts starting at just $3.80 ("snow-topped chocolate mountain cupcake").

Scrimp 2: Head to your local Coles for a beautiful box of Lindt chocolates (or whatever your Mum's favourites are). Better still, check the bakery section for some freshly baked cupcakes or their delightful array of gluten free macarons.

The Wanderlust:

Someday In Mum's Dreams: Take Mum around the world by rail in 53 days in 2015. A 37 000 kilometre westbound voyage beginning and ending in London will require an investment of around $40 000AU. Sold? Book here.

"Take a tour of the Australian Spice Garden featuring a range of edible plants. Enjoy a tapas style lunch showcasing the unique flavours from the organic gardens. On Mother's day, there is a special lunch (bookings essential, mains from $25); they will be running tours of the native spice garden, and the bush food nursery will be open.
