Published March 24th 2011
Australia's largest charity event will be held on Mother's Day, May 8th, to raise money for breast cancer research. The Mother's Day Classic fun run and walk is a great way to get active, celebrate Mother's Day, and contribute to a great cause. One in nine women are diagnosed with breast cancer. This event gives you the opportunity to help those suffering by running, walking, raising money, or volunteering to help coordinate the event.

One hundred thousand people are involved in this event each year. This fundraiser is an opportunity to not only support those suffering from this form of cancer, but also to meet others and be inspired through stories of courage and hope. The event is a reflection of the community spirit of Australians, and the courage and determination of those who suffer from cancer. Being involved is a great way to empathise with those diagnosed, and to raise money to help them live.

The Mother's Day Classic website contains details on how to register, a link to their youtube site, fitness tips and running and walking programs, an online tribute wall, and a link to the Mother's Day classic shop.

The Sydney domain event includes a 4km and 8km run and walk around the domain, from 6.30 am to 12 noon. Don't let the early start put you off, the running events begin first, with the memorial minute of silence for walkers beginning at 8.45am. Each runner gains a 2011 medallion. There are also prizes for place getters overall and in age groups, as well as prizes for the most fundraising.

Online entries close on 4 May. Late entries are available on the day from 6.30 am, but arrive early to avoid queues. The early entry fees are $35 adult, $17 child, $25 student, these are increased for late registration to $40 adult, $22 child, $30 student. There are also family rates. You can also enter as a team. If you register early you will receive an event information kit.

Volunteers are also needed for the event, with details here. A total of 1500 volunteers are needed in various roles at different locations, so if running or walking is not your thing there are plenty of other ways to be involved.

Comprehensive details can be found on the Sydney domain Mother's Day Classic website. There website provides details on how to get there, the course route, first aid, clothing storage, food court, start times and other important information. A map of the course route can be found here. The domain is easily accessible by public transport, car or bike. There will be road closures due to the event on Macquarie road and College street so plan ahead. All details are on the website.

There is also an event held in Parramatta Park, Parramatta with the details here. The format is generally the same, with registration available online also. Events are held throughout Australia in all major cities, as well as some regional events.

This event is a great way to support breast cancer research and celebrate mother's day with other Australians.
