It's a sad fact of life, but every year, it takes one designated day to remind us just how important our mothers are to us. Even though every day should be Mother's Day, most people don't show their appreciation until the second Sunday in May rolls around (in Australia and various other parts of the world). Perhaps because of the significance of the day, and because of the prevalence of the disease within many families,

Mother's Day is also the day which the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) has adopted for one of their most important fundraising events. In an effort to raise money for breast cancer research and to draw awareness to the many aspects of the disease, the Mother's Day Classic was established in 1998, and has grown over the years to become a national fundraising and fitness-orientated event.

On Sunday May 12 the Mother's Day Classic will be running in all capital cities, several large towns and many regional areas, and everybody is invited to attend and raise money for this important foundation. Although the specifics of each fun-run vary, the event aims to be manageable for people of all ages and abilities, and participants are encouraged to dress up, and enjoy the day with family and friends.

The Geelong event will be held at the Eastern Beach Reserve and on-the-day registrations will open from 7am, however participants are encouraged to register via the website prior to the event day. Geelong participants have the option of either walking 4km or 8km, or running 4km or 8km. While some people may intend to push themselves physically in their chosen event (male and female winners and placegetters (in the 4km and 8km run) receive a trophy for their efforts), this is a family-friendly event, and there is a strong emphasis on having fun. Every participant will receive a medallion, there are various prizes for teams and school groups who enter, and there will also be spot prizes on the day. There will also be plenty of activities for families, including an aerobics warm-up (for those interested), a food court, a petting farm and jumping castle for the kids, and other entertainment.

In order to remind everybody why they are participating in the event, and to provide some inspiration (even if it is a little bit sombre) there will be a tribute wall set up so that people can show their support or contribute a memory for a loved one who may be battling (or who battled) the disease. There will also be a memorial minute of silence before each running and walking event begins so that participants can show their respect to those touched by breast cancer.

Although the Mother's Day Classic does begin quite early, this is for the benefit of anybody who has made lunch plans with their family to celebrate the day. The Mother's Day Classic is a fantastic fundraising event and family day out, and everybody is encouraged to attend or donate to the cause.
