The play that dare not speak its name
These days we sophisticated theatre-goers pride ourselves that there isn't much on stage that can shock us - this is the play to test that theory.
Unfortunately the plays' pretty repulsive title will put many potential patrons off. Make no mistake, this is no Rebecca Of Sunnybrook Farm, but it has a realness and truthfulness that is reflected in all of playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis' work, of which this is the latest, and so far, most awarded.
The play is set in New York's Puerto Rican community, The Motherf**ker with the Hat is a mix between a sit com, Hispanic tele-novela and true crime documentary. It's hysterical, irreverent and as foul-mouthed as it is funny.
Newly released from prison and struggling to remain sober, Jackie has reunited with his longtime girlfriend, a crack-smoking live wire named Veronica.
Jackie leans on his addiction sponsor, Ralph D., who is married to Victoria, a resentful woman he met in AA. Also in the mix is Jackie's cousin Julio, a salon owner with a flamboyant streak.
When Jackie finds a man's hat in the flat he shares with Veronica, his jealousy spirals out of control and mayhem ensues.
