Sometimes the sweetest, most relatable comedy comes from tragic subjects. Take the example of Mother and Son, the acclaimed comedy TV series that tackled the subject of living with a parent with Alzheimer's, which aired on the ABC from 1984 to 1994. Audiences loved the brilliant actors (Ruth Cracknell and Garry McDonald) and the complexity of the storytelling which effortlessly portrayed both the humour and sadness of Maggie and Arthur's relationship.

This February, Australia's favourite familial relationship is being brought to the stage by Queensland Theatre Company, for crowds to delight at Maggie's acerbic wit and emotional manipulation of her dedicated son.

The production will be directed by award winning opera, theatre and musical director Roger Hodgman and will star Noeline Brown (Blankety Blanks, The King, Dancing with the Stars) and Darren Gilsenan (Dark City, Totally Full Frontal, Swinger) in the two main roles.

Those who may worry the stage remake won't be faithful to the TV series can relax, with original series writer Geoffrey Atherden having written the stage play for this upcoming production.

The story sees Arthur hoping to take a well-deserved holiday with his new squeeze. Anyone familiar with the TV show can probably already guess that Maggie is going to use every guilt trip and manipulative move in her playbook to thwart Arthur's chances at romance. Naturally his selfish older brother Robert, played by Robert Carlton (Chandon Pictures, The Hollowmen, Ocean Star) is of little help to his long-suffering sibling.

There are sure to be laughs galore in Mother and Son, appearing at QPAC's Playhouse from the 18th of February to the 15th of March. Tickets are available at queenslandtheatre.com.au or by calling 136 246.
