Leonardo di Vinci once said: Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen and the latest exhibition at the Artisan café features some beautiful artwork which many will argue is visual poetry.

Local Blackwood artist Doff Lyon's exhibition, showing until April 5th, is a mixture of acrylic, oils and pastels depicting some of South Australia's stunning landscapes.

This former primary school teacher, (who had to resign from her job because she got married!), only started seriously painting five years ago.

"It's been challenging to use the different mechanisms to interpret what I've seen," she said.

But this industrious and talented artist has created some beautiful scenes which calm and inspire us while enjoying a cuppa. The landscapes depicted are all local and vary, from the mystery, rugged and rough to the serene and peaceful – each one capturing the mood of the land with vivid colours, subtle shadows and beautiful skies.

Doff admits she's fascinated by rocks. "On our travels I always manage to sneak a few into the car on the way home," she said at the opening of the exhibition. As well as landscapes, Doff has been inspired to paint wildlife and plants, and has included a few in this collection. Two galahs sit cheekily on a peeling branch while several white flowers and shadows from a weathered branch make a stark contrast to the vivid terracotta earth in another image.[BREAK]

Another painting in the exhibition is of an old farm building which Doff said took her back to her childhood. Doff highlights limestone easily dissolves so many structures don't withstand the test of time.

Artisan Café owner Heather Holmes-Ross points out Blackwood and surrounds is home to many talented artists whose work is worthy of exhibition, which is why the Artisan's eastern wall is dedicated to showcasing their work. Known as Artispace, all artwork work on display in the area is available for purchase.

The Artisan café is now open until 9pm on Friday nights and each month patrons can enjoy a different artwork display.
