Melbourne has a well-deserved reputation for good food, music, art, culture, museums and beautiful parks. Melbourne also has some pretty unique, quirky and unusual places and things to do. Here's my favourites for something a little different.
**SURFING IN THE CITY
**
How about some cool surfing without the big drive? Close to Melbourne CBD and even closer to the Airport, recently opened
URBNSURF in Tullamarine caters for surfers from beginners to advanced. There's surf sessions, surf lessons, gear rental, shopping, food, hot tubs, kids playground and landscaped lawns to lounge on. A range of passes is available see
here for all the options including Spectator Passes.
FLY INSIDE
For anyone who'd love to go skydiving but feels a bit anxious about jumping out of a plane, there's
iFLY at Essendon Fields. You don't need a plane, a licence, a parachute or glider. You don't have to worry about the weather. You just go flying! Excellent.
**CAPTAIN YOUR OWN BOAT
**
Should you fancy a lazy cruise along the Yarra, consider renting an eco-friendly boat from
GoBoat . Neither a boat licence nor experience is required. Quiet electric boats take up to 8 people and you can byo picnic and beverages and cruise the Yarra River from Docklands up to
Herring Island and beyond. You can even bring your fur baby.
EXPLORE INDIGENOUS MELBOURNE
Visit the award-winning
Bunjilaka Cultural Centre at the Melbourne Museum featuring exhibitions of the history and culture of Aboriginal people, a beautiful indigenous garden and
events throughout the year.
The Ian Potter Centre:
NGV Australia . holds a large collection of Indigenous art and artefacts which are exhibited in rotation.
Take a walking tour:
The Royal Botanic Gardens runs
Aboriginal Heritage Walks and other indigenous experiences.
Walking Tours of Melbourne conducts
Indigenous Landscape Tours of Melbourne and suburbs. The
#guided_walking_tours ">
Koori Heritage Trust offers walking tours of Birramung Marr and also holds a large collection of artworks.
VISIT ELVIS
If you are a fan you may have heard of this
memorial in the Melbourne General Cemetary. Commissioned by the President of the Elvis Presley Fan Club of Australia in 1977,
Monument Australia outlines the more on the story of the Elvis Presley Memorial Garden.
BREAK THINGS
At the
Break Room in Collingwood you can let loose and break stuff. Really. Good for relieving stress and tension. See their
FAQ to have your curiosity satisfied.
EXPLORE OTHER REALITIES
Have fun with tech and zombies, aliens and otherwordly things at
Zero Latency's virtual reality experiences in North Melbourne or try
Virtual Reality Cinema in Collingwood.
So there's my list. Of course, there's plenty more unusual places and things to do in Melbourne and because we love having a top answer to "what did you get up to on the weekend?" it would be great if you shared your favourite unusual/quirky/fun Melbourne activity in the comments.
