WOODLANDS OF MARBURG

To all you lovers of the paranormal, Brisbane offers some truly spooky places to explore! One of the most magnificent and majestic old world buildings can be found in the quant township of Marburg, a 45 minute drive from Brisbane. 'Woodlands of Marburg', circa 1870 is an historic mansion and its grounds are rich with history and tales of its previous owners and visitors.

In 1870 Charles Smith, a sawmill operator from Walloon, acquired the land and built the majestic homestead to run his successful business and become the family home to Thomas, Mary and their 11 children.

The 144 year old mansion is allegedly haunted by the ghosts of its original owners as well as some priests who passed away within the Mansion after it was turned into a Seminary in 1945.

Many locals tell of legends of spirits, including one former servant at the Mansion, who was pushed to her death down the master staircase. A ghost of a young child, Billy, who tragically drowned in the pool, has allegedly been seen running around the first floor. Mrs Smith has been sighted on several occasions looking out over the property from the master bedroom. Today the mansion is open to the public as a restaurant and function centre and the sheer elegance and old world charm is breathtaking.

On our visit to the grand old mansion for dinner we were fortunate enough to speak to the waiter after all the other guests had left. He told us of his reluctance to venture upstairs or down into the cellar, as he frequently had the feeling of being watched and on several occasions as he was closing up for the night, saw the fleeting shadow of a figure going up the staircase. This grand old mansion is a must see for anyone who has a love of history and fascination for the paranormal.

WHEPSTEAD MANOR

Nestled in the leafy Brisbane bayside suburb of Wellington Point stands a historic old world mansion know as 'Whepstead Manor'. The original home (named Fernbourne) was built in the 1890's for the Burnett family who were sugar cane farmers. Mr Burnett was a very wealthy man but tragically went broke and lost his treasured home due to the post boom depression of the 1890's. The home was then renamed to 'Whepstead' and turned into a convalescence hospital for the sick in 1936 and was run by matron 'Dolly'.

There have been many ghost sightings at Whepstead over the years. The ghost of a chinese worker who's thought to have hanged himself in a tree has been sighted over the years. Mr Burnett's wife has also been sighted on many occasions, with her presence being felt in the home along with the distinct smell of lavender in the air when she is close.

Guests at weddings during the 1980's, when the home was used as a restaurant reported seeing a ghost who was dressed like a matron, matron Dolly perhaps? The home is now a private residence and driving by the mansion you can be forgiven for thinking you have been transported back to a bygone era, or perhaps feeling that you are driving through a scene from 'Gone With The Wind', as the gorgeous white sprawling manor is definitely a trip back in time.
NEWSTEAD HOUSE

Brisbane boasts one of its oldest existing private residence, Newstead House, at Newstead. Newstead House is a low-set mansion with breathtaking views of the Brisbane River. It was built in 1846 by Patrick Leslie, who sold the house to his brother-in-law, Captain John Wickham, RN, Police Magistrate of the Moreton Bay Settlement.

Prior to Old Government House being built, Newstead House was used by the Wickhams to hold extravagant parties, with dinner parties and balls attended by foreign dignitaries, government officials and military officers.

Today Newstead House is open to the public to view in all its preserved glory. Ghost stories at Newstead House are legendary, curtains have been seen blowing when no windows were open, strange noises have been heard, chess pieces which have seemingly moved by themselves, flickering lights and the appearance of shadowy figures.

The most notable sighting has been described as a young woman wearing an old-fashioned pink gown. This ghost is said to be the one responsible for the strange occurrences in one of the children's bedrooms in the north-west wing of the house. Staff of Newstead House have reported of a pair of antique shoes what were placed parallel will often be found the next day with the toes pointed inwards. Many believe the ghost of the lady in pink is a former nanny of the Wickham children.
