For some reason Easter is almost more popular than Christmas in our household.

I think it was because when the kids were little I started this game. When they woke up on Easter Sunday there would be baskets outside their bedroom doors and then a trail of tiny Easter eggs down the stairs for them to collect. At the end of the trail would be a clue written on an Easter egg shaped card. Once they solved the clue it would take them to the next Easter egg. For example the clue might read. 'Quick before the Easter egg melts'. Then the kids would find it in the oven. They would also find another clue which would send them to another room in the house or even outside.

Each egg found would be progressively bigger, until there was an absolutely enormous egg (one so large it was usually hidden behind the couch) that would be cracked open and shared amongst the family with a breakfast of hot chocolate and hot cross buns.

In some ways I made a rod for my own back in that it cost a literal fortune in Easter eggs and as we all became more health conscious it didn't seem a great idea to have a six month stash of chocolate in the house. Especially when the kids would forget about them and then I would find their stash when I was cleaning their rooms. Chocolate is just so damn tempting.

Now they are older we do less chocolate and better quality.

Now some of my husband's children, from his first marriage, have children of their own. We've continued to make a fuss about Easter. Living near a park we sneak out and hide Easter eggs for them and there is an Easter egg hunt which they look forward to each year.

But there are some other great Easter games some of which we might try out this year.

As well as hiding normal Easter eggs you could hide a couple of gold wrapped ones that if found are worth a special prize.

A friend was telling me about his family's tradition that sounds like heaps of fun. The family all stand around in a circle chucking a huge Easter egg to each other until the inevitable happens and there is a free for all to get to the broken chocolate.

For younger kids I also like the game Easter Bunny Says& #8232 ;. This is a version of Simon Says. Easter Bunny stands out the front and yells out instructions such as 'Easter Bunny says hop on one foot You probably know the drill from here. No one can stop until Easter Bunny says the words "Easter Bunny says stop." If he just says "stop" and you stop then you are out.

Some old fashioned games with raw eggs are also delightful messy fun. There is the old-fashioned egg and spoon race (or you can replace it with a chocolate one if you will). The other one is raw egg chucking. You get two lines of people-- a couple of metres a part. You have to throw the egg to the person on the opposite side. Every time the egg is caught the players have to take a step back until the inevitable happens.

So what Easter eggs will your family be enjoying this year? Come on, add to our Easter fun.
